Problems since shorting out my vts

  1. #1
I shorted out my vts, ran the amp power cable through the wheel arch (schoolboy error) and it wrapped around my suspension arm i think it was, anyway after that the car refused to start.

You'd turn the key, and it would go to start, but then just cut itself out.

Checked and replaced the fuel-cut out switch, couldn't work it out so the garage spent a few hours on it, checked coil pack and wasn't that, then told me they were 95% sure it was the ECU and to contact a mains dealer.

Well I wasn't paying citroen £740 for a new one, got one of 106owners, used n unlocked and that arrived this morning.

Just plugged that in, started the car and she starts made me very happy

Not really sure what to do now though as it starts but it's very juddery, won't idle properly. if you rev it a little it goes up very juddery, then drops to 500revs before either bouncing back to 1000 or cutting out. I also just left it running to see if it would stable and then after so long it just cut out.

Got a new warning light on dash as well now, assume it's the immobilisor? Should this be on as the ECU's unlocked. I'm assuming it's definately unlocked as the car started, but really am clueless with all of this.

    Any Ideas appreciated

Sounds like you may have done more damage than you think...

Are you sure that ECU is for VTS? Should like it's not lol.

    Was advertised as Gti/Vts

Looked identical apart from a load of stickers on it about it being unlocked.

Same model numbers or what not on it

Well, to me it sounds like that ECU isn't fueling right, what you describe sounds like what will happen if you was to run a VTS on a Furio ECU...

Right cheers, Am I right in thinking 106 Gti ecu and vts ecu are the same?
  6. #6
Well, as far as I know they are.
    Because they're the same engine...

It might be worth checking your ICV actually, as flat Batteries, Unplugging ECU's etc. can unsettle them.

Have you tried to drive it?

Is it possible to check my ICV without replacing it?

Haven't tried driving it yet, waiting for my dad to get home as don't fancy causing more damage

Yeh, just take it out, give it a clean while you're there, and put it back, make sure the connector is on good, then turn the igntion on and off about 5 times, so it can set itself. Then start it

That's brilliant cheers, will try it all later

    I hope it helps.

Although the rough running you describe points to the Fueling and Air mixture in my eyes...

Yeah, dunno what to do though if it is the ECU, as this one was obviously just second hand and I'm going on someone's word, but citroen want £740 for a new one, which is just isn't an option. Will play with it later and see what happens, was really needing it running for the weekend, so hopefully it's just something simple

Cheers, will let you know how i get on

Right I took her out for a drive.

Idling goes from 500 to 2000 rpm back and forth, seems to have stopped cutting out though..

However there's no power before about 4500rpm, foot to the floor and there's nothing, then it rises slowly to 4/4.5k revs and then rockets..

Would a remap solve all this? as obviously I don't fancy driving it like this forever however I am glad it's now starting, driving it about seemed fine when just cruising, and when it hit 4.5k revs it really was flying.

Want to take it london for my sister's birthday on sunday, and back monday (66miles). Will it be alright to drive her as is, sat at 70/80 in 5th seemed fine

i dont know much about ecu and all that but i wouldnt risk it, but thats my personal view

Took the battery off today then started and let it settle, then drove around steadily for 50 or so miles and now it seems driveable, it's definately not right though

There's a major flat spot between 1k and 3and half ish thousand revs, also the rev limiter is now at 6.5k..

Thinking maybe this ECU is from a vtr or furio perhaps.. is this possible? would it run..

And if so is it possible to remap this ECU to a Vts so it performs like it should, or should I just try and get a new ECU, just took enough searching to get the last one and I don't think it's right.

If I can just get it remapped then I'd much rather do that as I can just go get it done locally tomorrow and then all'll be sorted, just wanna know if this can be done and whether this is likely to be the problem?

Maybe the ecu has previously been remapped to run cams or something like that ? Not too sure tbh

Take all the above points on board but also get your alternator checked out as you may have done some electrical damage to it,just a thought.
