Spraying the front bumper

  1. #1
Right my front bumper looks a right mess and the prices people are asking for a bumper what are local to me is rather dear tbh,

Citroen want £130, Local Scrap yard want £75 and the local body shop what do spraying want between £80 to £100 so sod that,

So i will be taking the front bumper off and doing it my self i think,
now Halfords mix paint ive seen for £13 as i need EYC Quartz Silver,

What is the best Primer to use for doing this job?
How many tins of Silver, Primer, and lacquer spray do you reckon i will need to buy?

& what Sand paper / Wet and Dry will i need?

mate halfords mixed paint is SHIT...go to the body shop and get them to mix some paint for you, or another paint supplier, guarantee it will be a closer match. halfords primer is good enough, just make sure you do a good 3 layers of it and sand down between each with 800 wet and dry before layering on the colours!

the bumper has had many of sprays done in the past as last owner did a widemouth on it,
would it be better to use an orbit sander on it at 1st to get alot of it off and make it smooth?
them primer, and use wet and dry btw?

Local body shop near me can do 400ml tins, mix'ed to what i want for £10 a tin

yeh thats the way to do it, make sure its prepped properly e.g. properly sanded down, and make sure its all smooth, otherwise the finish will be terrible. thats a good price, should get it off them rather then halfrauds anyday!

Like i said tho mate, its had many of sprays on it in the past,
It has a widemouth on it atm, would it be best to get hold of a sander to get it smooth before using primer?

mate! no offence by this but the fact that your asking how to prep the bumper is a tell tale to how it will end up. Eyc quartz silver is one of the hardest silvers to paint you end up with shadows and dark spots.

but to answer your question if it has been painted with aerosol then you will need to sand it all down with a 400 - 600 paper then use a isolater coat to stop any reactions then 3 coats of primer and then 2-3 coats of basecoat then 2-3 coats of clear.

80-100 quid to paint a bumper is nothing i couldnt even prep and prime one for that at work. And tbh youprobs will get nowhere near as good finish as they will and by the time you have baught all your paint and papers and primers you wont be far off 100 quid to do a diy job.

yes mate, i dunno if i mentioned it but i thought i said fully prep it, so yes you will need to sand it down fully to get all them layers off so its ready to primer

so what would you say is best thing to do then? just buy another use bumper for around £40?

If its such a mess a new bumper is best, even if you need to spray it, the one you have will need ALOT of prep work so you may want a new one!

In all honesty just take the bumper you have to a body shop and get them to give you a price for the 40 quid you will pay for a new bumper and say another 40 to 50 they will make your's look like new.

Every one who says give it a diy job has very little knowledge of painting and silver isn t a colour that i would advise any one to paint themselfs.

Unless your bumper is way out of shape and fubar'd it wont be hard for them to do they will just da it down with 400 and give it a going over with bar coat to stop reactions then primer it flat it down then paint and clear coat it. not hard really but without a booth then the paint finish will never be the best mate.

mate just take it to a body shop £80 isn't bad. you can never match silver it is a right pain in the ass and being metallic (i think) you will never get a good shine using rattle cans. they are a cellouse based paint wich even using a proper spray gun will need flatting back and machine buffing to give a good shine

A lot of the time it pays in the long run to fork out a bit of cash to have it done properly
