Possible Clutch Problem ?

  1. #1
    Moning All,

I think I'm beginning to hear signs that my clutch is on its way out, when I start the car and put it into neutral and the clutch is up I hear a tapping sound coming from the engine. When I push the clutch down It stops tapping, changing gear is fine and dont hear the tapping at any other point.

    Any thoughts ?

    thanks

Does it also stop if you pull on the lever on the box if so it probably is your bearing. It can last for ages mine screams its arse off when i put my clutch in.
Going to do it when we get some sunshine.

Which lever are you refering to ?

    Yeh mate which lever

The lever on top of the box that the cable actuates. Rattle at idle with clutch pedal up is likely to be gearbox input shaft bearing-common fault on the saxo/106 series. It stops when the clutch pedal is down because in this position the gearbox is not been spun by the engine.
It will just keep rattling louder and louder - you might get another year out of it tbh.

How much of a job is it to change the bearing ?

You have to take your gear box out.

mine started doing this about 4 months ago, clutch is pretty much gone now

sounds like clutch thrust bearing. not very expensive to replace but you do hav to take the gearbox off to do it. so you may aswell do the clutch at the same time unles done recently. i think im right in saying you get a thrust bearing when u buy a clutch kit so might be the way to go.

How much are you looking at roughly for a clutch change ? I had a clutch change on a FIAT Bravo which was about £150.00 from memory.

It can also be be the input shaft bearing making a noise as they to are common for going on older saxo's, so be prepared for that as if it is change the box and clutch at same time
