Vinyl wrapping over stone chips?

  1. #1
I have a spare bonnet for my car, which has quite a number of stone chips on which I didn't notice when buying the bonnet as it was dark, and have therefore decided to try carbon wrapping it. I ordered a test piece to see how easy it was and although i've managed to get it to wrap around the curves i've noticed where it is applied over the chips it is still noticable as like an indent or bubble or something, is there a way to remedy this easily?

    Cheers

Sand the whole bonnet, til you cant feel the chips, then wrap it

if your wrapping the bonnet anyway, doesnt matter what it looks like underneath aslong as its smooth, so sand the paint off, and the chips should be gone

Good point actually, as it is quite badly stone chipped, I bought it to replace my dented one, but prefer the dent to being riddled with chips.

Would it be possible to touch them in with a touch up pen just in case I wanted to take it off or would it not work?

it will be pretty damn hard to "Fix" them diy. vinyl wrap shows up the smallest of marks, its a pain in the ass,

i would seriously just sand it down, wrap it, when your bored of the wrap, whip off and paint the bonnet :\

touch up pens "Might" work, but you will probably still see imperfections under the wrap

dont know if it helps but iv just touched up a stone chip on my bonnet. the colour is a great match but there is still an indent when you rub ur finger over. wrapping will always follow the shape of the surface it is on. sand down to metal then wrap. you could always RAT the car

don't rub the bonnet down to bare metal totally un needed. rub the bonnet down with 120 paper. Then get some stop top gold and fil the chips with it a quick sand down after will sort it out smooth as fewk. Then if you come to deciding you want to take the wrap off you have a bonnet ready for primer.

Ah fair enough guys, I shall probs do this once i've ordered some wrap big enough, I like it a lot more than I expected tbh.

Does anyone know if i will need any type of vinyl wrap primer for doing a bonnet?

    I've bought this wrap:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Some people say the 3m di noc stuff needs a primer on complex edges any shapes, however this stuff is not 3m and the seller said just to leave it two days out of warm atmosphere or sunlight before fitting?

    Cheers

dont rub back to bare metal as it will rust no doubt, just fill in the chips with filler primer or something similar then sand flat and apply vinal afterwards

    garry

I doubt it would rust with wrap over it? but ill probably be filling the chips as mentioned anyway as its less 'destructive'

Trust me bare metal WILL find a way to rust, Even sweaty hands makes bare metal get surface rust so imagine long term....do as suggested by bedford just sand primer and then re sand will be the best option mate!

it will mate i gaurnatee you, even the sticky side of the vinyl will contain an element of water which will instantly start the rusting of the metal

Ah fair enough, i'll just sand it down partly, fill the stone chips and may give it a coat of primer, or should I just nitro mors it all then give it a coat of primer, then wrap it?

Have you recieved your wrap yet? I ordered from the same ebayer 1 and a half week ago and still no wrap or reply to my message

Nope still aint received mine mate, he sent me a test piece and that took a bit longer than normal to arrive but i just thought he'd sent it second class due to it being a free sample.

He sent a message saying hes on holiday and his mates sending stuff out but if it doesn't arrive soon i'll dispute it and just get my money back as i've got a new decent bonnet now.

    I recieved mine today!
I emailed him asking where it is and he put he 'went back to his own country for a funeral.'
I am impressed though, I got some extra vinyl for free. Happy days!

Ah cool mate, i'll email him too see if he says the same lol. Its decent quality for the price init?

Only problem I have is i've now found a decent bonnet which was my first choice as I feel carbon wrap makes bonnets look matt black from a distance, not sure what to do with it now If it fits the roof I might use it for that if not I might sell it or use it for some small parts.
