Knocking/clunking

  1. #1
I have a mk2 vtr and it has been going great. However for the mot it had a new spring on the drivers side and within 6 weeks this horrible knocking noise had started to appear. I thought first of all it was the shocker, but it hasn't leaked fluid. Next thing is the antiroll bar had play in it, that then went bang and is incredibly bent, but i replaced that too and it still knocks and all i can now think of it the wishbone, any suggestions?

Could you describe the knocking more? exactly when it happens, and what your doing at the time...

It only ever does it as i go over a bump, it is fine when accelerating, decelerating, braking and cornering, only when i am travelling down a bumpy road or hit a slight bump

Check for play in the steering rack Dead easy, just grab the bulky bit in the middle and give it a jiggle

sometimes the top cup that holds the spring can have a rusty surface and can contribute to noises.

Go over your bumps a few times to get a record... Do some thick, quality spray grease around the top coil/cup use the straw to get it where you want it.

    that helped mrs corsa

mine does this I thought it was the arb link rods. I changed them and it is still doing it. im going to have a look this afternoon at everything. I will let you know how I get on

There doesn't appear to be play in the steering arm at all! or play in any of the bloody parts attached to my right suspension, i shall have a look at the spring later and let you know!

You did check for up/down movement in the knucle behind the inlet manifold?

i shall check that in a moment! haha the one place i missed, and i am meant to be an engineer :/

I had exact same thing it was both the wishbones had worn out (bushes)had them replaced & all is good.

Stupid question, do you just replace the bushes or the whole wishbone? because i went somewhere yesterday to get a new arb and i enquired and he only sold them as a set
  12. #12
best off just replacing the whole wishbones really so u have new balljoints too then you can rule them out aswell

Ok then, i shall, only replace the one side?
  14. #14
generally the ball joint is fooked on the wishbone and i would personally only ever change them as a pair, and if it were me for teh cost i would change the drop links at the same time

ok then, thanks, i have ordered new ones, replaced both arb's too so it will be like a new car again, might stick to the road like shit to a wooley blanket again then

I checked mine yesterday and everything looks fine. All the bushes look new. I then put a small bottle jack under the wishbone to lift it up to where it would normally be with the wheel on and the drive shaft arm had some up and down play init and the gator was spit (see photo). Im not sure if there should be some movement in them anyway but where the arow is the actual shaft moves slightly up and down and the gator in the image is split around the jubile clip. I need it up on proper ramps really.

Best solution for you is to get the gaiter changed as quickly as poss, otherwise the cv joint will go dry & wear out. Then you`ll need a new shaft.

Well i have new wishbones coming anyway because there is a slight bit of play in my drivers on, i shall get Sybil (yes i have named my car) up on my ramps and have a look. Thanks for the advice guys! this has just put my plans back to do some mods

There is supposed to be a pit of play in the driveshafts. If there wasnt then they wouldnt work.
  20. #20
That is ok then, i shall just do the wishbones, if that continues then i shall change the driveshaft and if that continues then the steering rack
  21. #21
Ok so wishbone replaced, handling is now much better but there is still a slight knocking, just not as often as it was before or as loud, i think i will leave it now and see if the mot report brings anything up! thanks for your help everyone

good stuff. i had mine checked out yesterday on the ramps and it turns out my knocking is not the driveshafts. Im getting a new boot on monday and everything should be good. Thanks for the help to. :-)

Erm new wishbones, arb's, no play in steering rack or anything but the bottom strut has a bit of play in it, so im assuming that could be the problem?
  24. #24
For anyone who commented on this and still has the problem it is the arb bushes mine were completely perished and put some nice blue ones on and it handles so much better

    hi,
    had same prob
jack the car up. take the wheel off. look behind the brakes and there is the ball joint (lower) make sure that the bolt is tight (the bolt is directly behind the brake disk)

On my vtr the nob who fixed the ball joint hadnt fixed it properly and rather than replacing the bolt after stripping the threads with the nut, he just left it on. Only the blue plastic on the nylock with holding the nut on, so i used my trusty anglegrinder cut the fucker off and then put on a new one.
    You may have same prob.

i had the same thing turned out my anti roll bar bracket snapped had to go scrappy and get new suspension arm

Mine was only bushes! aren't i lucky
