Knocking Noise From Left *Getting Worse*

  1. #1
Hi. Noticed recently that when im turning left, there's a knocking comes from the front passenger side wheel area.

Doesnt happen everytime, only seems to occur when im accelerating, say like in 2nd gear coming to a junction and turning left 90 degree's. It doesnt make a noise if im free rolling around a corner, or even when ive got it on full lock in a car park etc?

Any idea's what it could be from this?

    Thanks

Have noticed, the fast im accelerating, the quicker the knocking noise comes on??

have you checked if its driveshafts or cv joints? my cars got a knocking noise but cant find the problem at all, had it in 2 garages and both couldnt find what was making the noise, so you could have a ghost like knock like me haha, hope you sort it pal let us know if you do as im willing to try and find what mine is.

Well i havent got a clue about looking for problems myself, i wouldnt know what i was looking for tbh?

Worst case scenario, i was gonna take it over Manic Motors and ask if they can have a look for me, as the MOT isnt due till January.?

when you find out please let me now, mine does this when i turn right and can hear it on passenger side. whatever it is its got worse in 2 weeks

mine does the exact same when turning left. But i havent bothered to get it checked out it was happening in my last mot and passed it so i have learnt to live with it.

mine does the same when i had a look my cv boot has come off so will be getting a new drive shaft, but could be other things, top mount for your suspension or even drop link
  8. #8
    Will be your driveshafts mate
  9. #9
Ahh shot, thats the 1 thing i was hoping it wasnt, was hoping it wsa just drop link or the likes
  10. #10
Well i can honestly say, the knocking noise is now progressively getting much louder and more often, and im now hearing it a couple times when turning right.

Was planning on taking it to Manic Motors for them to have a look at the weekend, but apparently they're not working at the minute.

    Nooooo!

Just had a look around the wheel arch area, and noticed the Drop Link has got a split in the rubber at the top and bottom.

Will this be causing the knocking when turning left?

Theres no play in the wheel, everything else 'looks' fine, except the split in the rubber?

    Thanks

Jack up front of car its easiest if you jack both sides as if you do one side at a time it will lock the drop link of the other side and make it harder to get out, obviously take wheels off then you just need a spanner and allen key to take them off, allen key is just to stop the thread spinning. thats it basically pretty easy

Thanks Ben, ill bear this in mind.

    Thanks

Replaced the drop links and still have exact same noise?

What other options could it be? Could engine mounts make a loud knocking noise when turning? Worried incase its something major now?
  17. #17
ive got this exact same problem but mines when turning right
  18. #18
i have this problem too, really getting on my nerves now. ive been told it could be cv joints, drop links. found out it had new shafts and cv's a couple of week before i bought it so it cant be that and ive changed drop links so its not that.

it could be lower ball joint aswell....
My vtr makes a loud knocl every time i have full lock to the right and reverse. I have new top mounts, new dampers, springs, droplinks, and welded the spring cup aswell.
I can tell there is a little play in my ball joint.
Raise the car and use a big plier, then try and press the ball joint together, if there is any play, this could be the reason for your trouble.

try'd the wheel bearin m8? had a knockin noise and it was the wheel bearin. as to the track rod ends best thing is a buzz gun or put a big bar over the top of it and get a pal to lean on it whilst u undo the bolt....

Ive had a proper good look under the car and around the wheel arch's, and as i said, im no expert, but cant see anything wrong, and theres no play in the bearings, ARB, Wishbone's??? Driveshift seal isnt split or anything?

Anyway, noticed its getting a lot worse now, like a louder, deeper clunking noise, and its starting to squeal or squeak as im accelerating out of a turn, only when turning left though?

My dads told me it WILL be the bearings if its making a squealing noise, is this right?

    Thanks
  24. #24
bearings are more of a humming sound, obviously it gets louder as you go faster.

mine still knocks when turning right, had new wishbones, droplinks, struts etc even passed an mot last week, so still have no idea whats knocking. people keep telling me its driveshafts

take your batter out and take the tray underneath out. there's the gearbox mount. make sure the 2 bolts are tight and the one in the middle, if they are then either the mount is fucked or its something else but an even easier way to check this is to turn the car on and put your foot on the brake, quickly bring the clutch to the bite so it nearly stalls but doesnt and have someone else look at the engine and if it either moves loads or can hear it then i would say gearbox mount.
