Paint cracking on alloys

    I primered all my alloys again yesterday and they were fine. I put two coats of white on one wheel and it looked spot on. I have went to see it this morning to lacquer and the paint has cracked in a few places what do i do? and what is causing this? Any help is appreciated

    you need to rub them down again as the paint has re acted then primer again

    Ive done that a couple of times, just cracks again :/

    maybe change the paint then mate or once they are in primer let it dry them make sure they are clean

    Already changed the paint twice lol any ideas what to clean them with as i think that could be the problem?

    i use soapy water then a clean cloth to dry them or use baby wipes

    You need something like thinners to wipe over the wheels thoroughly,the paint is either reacting with the primer or you have grease/oil on the wheels.

    Im guessing its going to be the grease or oil as ive never had a problem with the primer before

    just sand them down and buy a paint called barcoat put that on the wheels then primer and top coat as normal

    Wiping with thinners is ok but using panel wipe is better.

    useing thinners/panel wipe will not solve the problem. Oil and grease will not cause cracking they only cause silicone spots and floatation.

    What has happend with your wheels is a reaction of the thinners in your white paint reacting with your primer. I am guessing your using halfords paint and halfords primer.

    you need to get the full wheel back down to bare metal unless you have a compressor then use bar coat or paint seal before priming and painting again.

    I used to use thinners before when painting but panel wipe is the one. Thinners dig in when over used.

    if u primed them and painted them and lacquared them all in a day i think u have your answer as the different coats need time to dry before anything else goes on them. as above wouldn;t say wiping them was doing anything as u get silicone spots in paint if that was happening not cracking.

    I custom paint wheels full time. Painting and lacquering should be done in one go. Primering is best done a day before.

    I had my primer done a few days ago and im using carplan primer and hycote white gloss.

    As said in my previous you need to strip the paint back to metal. You then need to prime and paint again using the same brand of paint. Use upol its made so it doesnt react with itself and gives you the bet finish available from a can.

    you can buy it from any trade paint supplyers for about 4 quid per 600ml.

    once there stipped down to metal mate you need to clean them good with something like white spirit or nail varnish remover to remove any dirt / grease.

    if you dont strip them to bare metal you will get the same happening again because carplan and hycoat paints are shit and in my opinion shouldnt be sold.

    What grade sand paper shall i use to sand them right down?
