cars got no power?

   posting on behalf of a freind whos got a vtr,
   he's got no pulling power in the car at all, barley gathers speed and goes though revs like anything!
   literaly, he was in 4th gear, doing 40 - 5000 revs!!
   
   also, the carpet all near the hanfbreak is very very hot, any ideas as too why both these are? cheers

   Underneath the handbrake is where the catalytic converter is.
   
   It sounds like a clutch issue if he's doing 40mph at 5k rpm. It could well be slipping. If he needs a new clutch slipping then give me a hsout or visit my website.
   
   With regards to the hot carpet, his cat could be blocked, when they get blocked they heat to the point where they glow. ALthough, the extra revving could be causing it to heat more than normal.

   he's had somone have a quick look under the car, and the exhaut piping has split apparently, although i wasnt sure if they'd be any reasoning fo either problems,
   
   thanks for your input kris, as a rough quide, what would you say repairs for both of those would be? - literal just a esitimate as if its more then 300-400 hundred it might be worse scrapping the car as he got it for 200 anyways

   Probably about 250 to 260 for both jobs. Thats from me.
