Difference between diesel and petrol engine oil?

Found some Shell turbo diesel oil, 10w40. Will it be ok to use in a petrol engine? I would assume theres some difference to the makeup, but then again Ive seen some oils being marketed as a use-in-either-engine oil.

    Anyone?

the oil i use is 10w-40 for petrol or deisel engines. I cant see there being any differences, only in price!

diesel oil contains cleaning agents to reduce soot/shit buildup.if its specifically for a diesel i woudnt bother, having said that alot of the old boys i work with swear by running in new motors on diesel oil? dont know why but they do,

if its pure just for diesel engines then its as above it contains more viggerous cleaning agents.

but most oils are for either but as most diesels are getting more avanced more and more are needing different oils

for example a peugeot 206 hdi uses 10w/40 semi synthetic
a honda crv 2007 uses 0w/30 fully syntetic ONLY

Someone on a rover website I frequent recommended using a correct for engine grade diesel oil just for a couple of thousand miles. They took photos showing the sump after it had been removed and had just had normal petrol engine oil changes - grime and sludge in the bottom. They ran the diesel oil for 2000 miles or so, drained the sump and removed it. The insides were very clean, almost like a new sump was fitted. Its worth googling it if you can find it, never tried it myself but was interesting reading.

most oils can be uesd on both these days(where it states so), but its always worth buying correct oil tbh, end of the days its your engine

diesels run cooler then petrol as a known fact, this may result in the overall manufacture proccess and end product being different

for example, the oil for diesel engines may not work as well a higher temps as it doesnt need to, so may be cheaper to make that way... which would be bad news for your engine... this may not be the case, but is with most stuff these days tbh
