can a car start when a fuel pump doesnt prime?

basically im having some bad running issues with my car, i think ive narrowed it down to my fuel pump, when i go round left hand corners or bumps the car shakes violently and when not in gear or when the clutch is pressed it has a tendency to stall

when i turn the key i cant hear the fuel pump priming, its completely quiet, which surely isnt right?

so im guessing this can be either the pump itself or the electrical connections?

where would be the best place to start?
    -cleaning the gauze?
    -bench test the pump?
    -test some wires?

When my fuel pump was not priming, the engine would not start, obviously it's getting no fuel pumped round at all. So to answer your question, from my experience no.

I now have a live switch running to fuel pump that I turn on and off manually.

Jeff, you running a Predator yet? The Pred *doesn't* prime, it turns on the fuel pump once you are cranking.

that rules out the fuel pump then i guess, im hoping my running issues are down to a temp sensor as it only happens when its warmed up
