Got willwood calipers, but want more braking power :D

  1. #1
hi guys, ive just recently got a vts from a decent member on here, its got willwood 4 pot calipers on the front, standard calipers on the back, and exact braided brake lines.

Is there anything else i can do to the brakes to make it stop that little bit better??? i have been looking at the 23mm master cylinder but am unsure whether or not it will fit a phase 2 vts running abs

also are there bigger rear calipers i can put on???

    Many thanks

    Vince

any help on this one guys, just want them to be more punchy

Bigger master cylinder mate, gti6 one should do the job

right brilliant, i was thinking that was the final thing to be done to make them the best they could be, what about rear calipers. is there anything i can do with them

You can easily run a saxo on drums at the rear as saxos are so awfully balanced and there's no weight at the rear to need braking.

Tyres are the biggest difference in braking. Toyo t1Rs etc don't count as good tyres despite what people think.

A bigger master cylinder won't increase braking, just change the feel of what's already there.

You can get a 2 port 23mm mc for abs.

yes i think thats what im gonna get, dont get me wrong ashley i am impressed with the braking but just want a little bit more from it thats all. lippy took me out in his nos'd vts to show me what his car was like a long time ago and also did a brake test, he was running the gti6 upgrAde and that really snapped you neck so the willwoods should be mental. just want it to be really sharp and on it straight away, i think a bigger master cylinder will be more than enough just to give it that little bit more. thanks for you advice anyway bud

What tyres have you got on at the moment?

    Budgets paul.

Vince, the difference between quality tyres and half decent tyres will be as much as 10 meters in terms of stopping distance.

as mentioned the rears dont want touching the car would be undriveable

and tyres and suspension again as said have a MASSIVE affect on braking force/effinciencey, its not just about the brakes you run, aswell as the discs and pads your running, what type are they? ive got brembos on pagid pads and drilled grooved discs, budget tyres and spax adjustable on the hardest settting, you couldnt stop any quicker tbf, and that with budget tyres..... maybe worth you directing the search to toher areas..

    the set up is:

    Wilwood midilite / dynalite calipers
    283mm wilwood discs
    EBC yellowstuffs
    CL Racing fluid
    Exact braided brake lines.

it's more than enough as a set up. could spend a whole day on track and stop no trouble.

    downside is the tyres.

to need 'more' from the braking, you must live your life at 120mph +

right ok fair enuf then wont touch the rears but will put a 23mm master cylinder cus its fairly easy and cheap mod to do. thanks for all the help, will look at some different tyres then for the front when there a little bit more worn down

    cheers guys

I have no idea why would anyone need to upgrade brakes on standard Saxo...

My VTS with stock engine, oem discs, ferodo DS2500 pads and a048 tires stops like crazy - to power is just insane! And absolutely no problems with overheating, even on 20-30min track sessions!

Saxo has awesome brakes - best brake feel i've experienced on a road car (especially with DS2500)

Willwood should be way overkill, IMO tires are the problem as said before.

May i ask why you dont think your 4 pots are sufficient enough!Dont need anymore than 4 pots on a saxo FACT
  14. #14
I find the yellows a little.numb till they get hot. That may be your issue. If its road use try standard grade pad!
  15. #15
as above yellow pads arent ment for road use and take a bloody good run to heat up, i'd swap them for some better road ones like the ferodo ds ones work a treat on my vts

I wouldnt even touch the mc id simply adjust the balance bar as a start its free and makes a huge difference
The setup you have should be more than enough tbh its same as im running on almost 190hp and it holds up fine even under hard use

Am running willwoods with standard mc and red stuff pads. They are a little numb too till abit of heat it in them, but the stopping power is great with them brakes and some Uniroyal rainsport tyres

You can get yellow stuffs hot enough from road driving.

granted, theyre a bit wooden when you get going, but it takes a while for the engine to get up to temp so unless you like hitting 7k on a cold engine, theres no real need for the brakes to be at optimum temp as soon as you get in it.

theyre not predominantly a track pad, but obviously work well there.

As alex said, a good set up - and he's spent a few days at the ring / is currently still there.

Vince, you could always swap and put the other pads in i gave you, theyre closer to a 1144 grade. i gaurentee once hot, youll want to put the yellows straight back in...

As stated before, tyres make a massive difference in braking, people often overlook this massively (including myself when i bought those 4pots).

When i had a set of superLs with R1R's on, the stopping power was far greater. because i never drove too hard, budgets were acceptable for the use on the standard S rims, but if i really wanted to push on, i'd have michelin PE2's all round as a minimum.

    PE2 all the way!!!

best road tire and despite the price still a good investment because they wear really really slow!

contisportcontact are a little better (not sure they exist in the right size) but wear way quicker

I've also heard there was PScup in 15" - it's even better but more track oriented

I had a set of PE2's on my saxo that lasted 67k miles. still about 2.5 - 3mm of tread left, they started cracking though so had to get rid lol

i think Adsayer on here got near 100k miles out of the rears!

Can't get contis for the saxo sizes (not in the UK anyway). I have a set of conti sport 3's for the BMW though after hearing rave reviews.

A mate was putting in some very good times at the 'ring last year in his 197 on conti's.

Like has been said before you could have to best brakes in the world but if you have shit rubber on, you aint gonna stop very well at all
