has it had a snapped dipstick at one point?

Now that you mention it, when I first got the car, I'm
Sure I swapped the dipstick coz the original was snapped
    What would that mean?
It's snapped and in the bottom?

the broken bit is probs stuck in the tube, i seen it happen on a 206, i took the sump off an removed the broken piece, easier than breakin the dipstick tube

Alternatively you might have the wrong model dipstick,
I wanted to change mine on my Mk1 R, so i went down to my local breakers and tried different dipsticks in mine but they wouldn't fit and the breakers said that it was because that Saxo's have different sized and shaped dipstick's, maybe stupid to suggest but might be worth looking into what model(if you want to call it that) will fit yours..

mk2's have the plastic at the end but the mk1's dont

Well ive had a 'yellow handle' full metal dipstick, that didn't fit
And an orange handle metal with plastic end dipstick and that wouldn't fit :/
So I don't know what my other options are!

    Problem solved
    Just pushed it
And held it, seemed to release a bend and has now sat snugly
