Basically my car is making horrible grinding noises when driving, specifically when I release the throttle peddle and more when I take it out of gear and roll forward. I think its the driveshafts but I dont want to shell out over 100 quid if thats not going to help the situation.

    Any ideas?

Either driveshafts or badly knackered bearings. Best way to check which it is put the car on a jack/ axle stand and rock then wheel back and forth holding it by the top and bottom then the left and right hand side. If you find any play in it then chances are its the bearing, also check the boots on the driveshaft you may have split one and its been losing grease otherwise grab the driveshaft push it back and forth then move it left and right there should be very little/no movement if you do find a lot of movement then its your driveshafts. Sorry for the long read hope it helps anything else drop me a pm

does it do it if ya are coastin?

Tbh thinking about it more seems to be more like the wheel bearings as they tend to do what your saying when theyre knackered or it could at worst be your gearbox/diff.

thanks for the help guys, and yes it does it when its coasting. ill try that tomorrow morning and let you know.

if its the worst case scenario, i.e gearbox and diff, how can i check that and whats the estimated cost involved.

    cheers again

To check the box spin the passenger wheel see if you can hear any noises from the box itself like crunching/graunching or any clunks/ bangsnthen it will be the box.

checked the drive shafts theres no play in them? saw that the D/S cv boot had come of the driveshaft itself. okay will check that later cheers.

That may be your problem if the cv boot has come off and its started to lose grease then the noise could be the joint drying up.

been away for a while. woody could that cause the exesive noise when coasting as well?

Yes if the joints gone dry you will get lots of noise from it try changing that 1st as it may be one of a couple of problems.
