Jack the car up and look up the back of the engine above the engine mount, you should see the 3 gear linkages, they are long bars with a cup end that goes on to a ball, they should all be connected. You might be able to see them from the top down.

Jack it up from the passenger side :-)

there is also a pin in the arm on the gearbox which often wears out which you can buy a new roll pin for from citroen dealers, but as said its probably to do with the gear linkages aswell

there is also a rubber bush on the main selecter arm that can cause the sloppyness

well i got the car to the garage yesterday before they shut and the guy put his hand down the back and said yes the linkage is broken!
but today he rang to say that the linkage into the gearbox is broken and that he can't get to it without removing the gearbox! but he was wiggleing the rod from the outside of the car? is the rod into the gearbox only accessable from inside the gear box? funny how i could find most gears except reverse.

WTF!! Do not go back to that garage. Ill bet £100 that its only a linkage, You do not need to to remove the gearbox.
