burning smell?

   When I get out my car I smell a burning smell, I think its coming from round the wheel area, could this be my brakes and if so why? Aslo every time I pull off in 1st gear there is like a squeak and gets higher untill I change into 2nd , that comes from the front somewhere

   check the brakes for binding an check the front susp too incase its snapped a spring
