5th gear issues

   When doing 60mph I stick the car in to 5th gear. However the rev counter shoots up and bordering the red.
   
   When I put it down to 4th gear, rev counter goes down and the engine sounds normal.
   
   So I have been driving at 60 in 4th, I know I should be in 5th. Question is, will this damage the engine?
   
   Anybody have anyidea why the car does this?

   does the engine itself rev up?

   You are selecting 3rd gear by mistake.

   I'm in 5th gear for sure, at first I thought it was in wrong gear.
