Dodgy Handling

  1. #1
My car seems to suffer from cronic oversteer and understeer. Even when driving at proper speeds its very skitish.

I just recently added an upper strutbrace and have a lower one to go on soon. Better at lower speeds but I had huge lift-off oversteer the other day.
    And its very twitchy now.

My spec is as follows: VTR, Braces, 16s with T1-Rs and lowered 40mm on springs.

Any suggestions to make my car go in a straight line would be well appreciated.

And please, no-one post back if your gonna say " Change your driving style" because as I said, it does it at ANY speed on a clean surface.

check your tyre pressures and uprate your shocks.

I dont understand how the car can be over-steery if you are driving slow though?

    as ad said check pressures

    check bushes to

which springs and how low is the rear

Eibach springs and down 40mm allround. I played with the pressures the other week and I must of messed it up.

I get ovsteer on lifting off but that was only when I'm pushing the car
and whats proper speeds, geometary might be out on car when you lowered it did you get four wheel alignment done

Ive never pushed my car to its limits yet!

I can tell you that the tracking on the front is out.

Im blaming this strutbrace for some reason.

Does everyone think I should polybush it allround and buy a decent suspension kit?

And keep both upper and lower braces?

start by buying a decent suspension kit, then have 4 wheel alignment done. this should ideally be done when lowering anyway. then start looking at bushes, suspension parts (ball joints, wishbones, track rods, link rods etc). upper and lower braces wouldn't cause the car to handle poorly the way you describe, quite the opposite in fact.

Sound like a plan Sean, thanks. I was going to buy the GMC/Bilstein setup and bushes at the same time to kill 2 birds with 1 stone you see.
Get them fitted at the same time.

I noticed yesterday when I swerve from one side to the other (cough) the brace has stiffened it up more, now I can feel the suspension sagging and rebounding. I think its psychological that I think its sliding all the time, when really its not.

it will just feel a little more vague as you've lowered it and not reset the suspension geometry

    Your right sean.

Are Saxos that light on the back that they spin easily?

Because I was thinking of taking my spare wheel out to save some weight. Would it make it too light over the back?

The law is you have to have a spare for your MOT, but it MUST be legal. And mines shot!

don't have to have a spare for the mot mate, and anyway my spare has been bald as a coot for the last 3 mot's and sailed through
the reason the back end can be a bit jittery is because most front lowering springs have an increased spring rate, but when the rear is lowered the rate stays the same so it becomes mismatched. still shouldn't cause the rear to become skittish though unless you go really low. you wouldn't notice any difference by just removing the spare wheel, if you want to strip then do it properly ie whole rear seat, rear cards carpets, plastic trim etc
