put the car on axles and took mi wheel off and noticed shite this struts a bit loose.....

i know fuck all about mechanics...what is the circled bit? the rubbers looked shagged and it wont tighten
  2. #2
I think thats one of the ball joints mate, if you look in the engine bay near the back it runs all the way along and connects to the other strut. Thats all i know as never really had any problems with that one, just the drop links and anit roll bar bushes

    thats a track rod end

springs look nice and new so im guessing recently lowered
worth a shout at whovere did it as if they didnt cause the damage they propbably at least noticed it or they just havent tightened it properly

if it is shagged and loose itll be seized most likely and needs replacing asap as it controlls the steering of that wheel so if it comes of that wheel will turn wherever it wants and youll end up in a hedge/bush/fence/lampost ect ect

not a hugely hard part to sort they just screw out the track arm but setting the tracking back up after if your not sure i wouldnt attempt

best bet is off down the garage for a quote matey

also springs look nice and new so im guessing recently lowered

just heads up it will get to a point when the thread jsut turns and it wont get tighter, in this case you just need to clamp the track rod to the strut which stops the thread turning so you can do it up tighter

if you try to loosen it again the thread will probs turn as well so again you will need to clamp it, or just angle grind it off lol

dont get the garage to fit it, you can fit it yourself, just get it roughly there so its driveable then go down the garage and get the tracking done, when i did this my garage charged £16 for the wheel alignment/tracking.

    okies thanks lads much appreciated!!

Before you take it off count the number of turns, then when you put the new one count the number back on. That way the tracking will be in the ballpark. I had to angle grind my old ones off though but its not a difficult thing to replace. Seems like someones had that off as it looks OE as theres a plastic cup under the nut usually which is missing. Regarding the new ones I'd personally put some thread lock on it even if its got a nylock nut too, belt and braces and all that.

A lot of track rod ends or ball joints have an allen key socket in the end so you can stop it spinning.

Hehe perhaps I should have said "some" then rather than "a lot"! I've certainly seen them - if I spot them again I'll try to remember to post here
