Noise from front left..

Hi, this is the second time in about 3 weeks this noise has appeared... In the video I say if I take my foot off the clutch, I meant to say if I press the clutch. Hopefully this video will solve the problem...

    Cheers,

If it stops when you put your foot on the clutch the chances are it's the gearbox and not a wheel bearing.

Does it do it on tickover?

My video doesn't appear to be as clear as I thought. (that's what you get for recording it on the motorway and uploading it at the services!)

If I depress the clutch at 0:42 you can hear the noise get louder and more crunchy. Under acceleration it goes away, even very light acceleration.

Doesn't do it on tick over, only when the car is rolling, and this is only the second time, 1st time it lasted for all of 400 yards, this time it was intermittent over roughly 4 miles.

Would a cracked disc make this sound, ie rubbing on the pads?

    Cheers,
    Dave.

Done some more research and this is what it sounds like when idling, clutch was also depressed and released and it made no difference. You can hear the noise when the revs drop after each rev.

This video (2nd one) is me switching the engine off and you can hear the noise a lot more clearer. Still not entirely convinced it's the gearbox as it doesn't get louder when driving.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Dave.

I'm starting to think this noise is coming from behind the dash, especially as it seems to wind down quite loudly when the engine is switched off. I've turned the blower on and off and up to 1 2 and 3 and it makes no difference.

Does it go off sometimes then come back? I had very similar sound and my dad greased something underneath the car and it sorted it. I'll try find out what he did.

Yeah, it's happened twice, with a 3 week interval.

That would be great if you could find out.

    Cheers,

    Dave.

    Cheers Dom!

I've had a look on eBay and found a pair of drive shafts with 2 year guarantee unlimited mileage for £120, bargain I think.

Got a growing list of things I want to do!

Head, sump, inlet and manifold gaskets. Crankshaft seals, fly and cam. Cambelt. Driveshaft seals and driveshafts!

Should be fun! Got to convince my Citroen mechanic mate to do the work for some dosh! But he has a wife and kids so has no time! I'd do it all my self, but my mum has sold her house so now I've lost my garage and driveway and where I live is a main road :-(

    Dave.

Meh. Me and Mike always find somewhere to do our shit, either at my sisters garage, his driveway or my house. When we have a day working on the cars again and got the space, I will let you know if you want?

Anybody know whats this sound coming from my VTR? - YouTube

When I had that noise just before I sold my VTS, it turned out to be a bearing. I'd changed the driveshaft and the noise didn't go away

Yeah that would be sweet, I'd have to do everything in one go so it'd probably be an all day thing. I'll pm you my number.

Certain I just saw you by Mike's... I was behind you going down his road...non stalker like, on the way to my gf's Mums.

I'll change both to be certain...where does the bearing get pressed on to (never done one before) ?

    Dave.

It's easier to buy a bearing (about £20 iirc), take your strut off and take it to a garage to get them to get the old one out and new one in. then just re fit the strut.

cost me about £40 in total - 20 for bearing, 20 for labour of press.

make sure you get a driveshaft that matches the bearing - tapered driveshaft needs tapered bearing. flat driveshaft needs flat bearing. (tapered were on post 2001 models [well, for VTS' they were anyway])

Dave, id be happy to do the work for you

Hmm, according to my motor factors I've got a flat shaft...and eBay says the same. MK2 VTR 2000 sounds about right...I think....

    Crankshaft Seal
    Driveshaft Seals
    Wheel Bearings
    Headgasket/Inlet/Mani/Sump
    Wishbones
    Lower engine mount
leaking Sunroof/Water coming in from behind dash...
    New rear callipers
    Bleed brakes

If you could give me a quote for that except the rear callipers as I have them, and a separate quote for just labour...PM would be more appropriate :-)

    Cheers,
    Dave.

Yeah, would need two quotes, one with parts, one without.

I've replaced a warped hub, both wheel bearings and NS driveshaft, still have the problem.

The only thing left to replace is the OS driveshaft and the gearbox. So I'm going to do the driveshaft first...and hopefully that'll be it sorted.

The reason for the driveshaft being replaced is the intermediate bearing is sounding like the culprit for the sound, but it still could be the diff in the gearbox...

    Hope this helps...

    Dave.

    Update...

Replaced the Driver side drive shaft...problem fixed! But the original noise I think was a wheel bearing as it would only randomly come and go, until I replaced the wheel bearings...but because it was random I don't know if that was the cause or if it'll crop up again at some point...but it has been nearly a month since it was changed and it's not made the noise again.
