Thanks for the reply iv already give it a clean it's doing the same, was wondering if any one with a mk2 1.4 could go out there way to take a pic of there back tail light connectors so I can be sure the wires are in the right place, the reason why I say this is simply because when I compared both tail light connectors together most of the wires were in the same place as each other but one or two wires were in different places ? Do you guys think that could be causing the problem ?

Probably not only one side will have rear fog light so there will be extra wiring for it, have you traced back the earth wires and checked the points where they connect to vehicle body, check there is no damage/corrosion etc
sounds stupid but take the bulb out and turn it round. they are double filement bulbs so they are mena be dull wen the lights are on but brighter when u brake. if they dont change when u brake then the bulbs are in wrong
i failed my mot for that
