women in need!!??

Iv recently had a mot which my car failed. To get it throu i had to pay £350 amongst other things he changed the drivers side gearbox mounting seal. After a couple of days it started leaking gearbox oil rapidly. I took it back and they said the seal had broken and did it again. Today its started leaking again slowly. I have taken it back and they said its because the gear selector is on the way out.

Im female and dont know anything about cars, i dont know if im being ripped off or not and need some advise!? I had the gearbox replaced last year and have had nothing but trouble with it since.

Sorry if the above doesnt make any sense but this is just a final shot before i sell it

    its a saxo vtr 1998

    Gearbox mounting seal leaking?!

The gearbox is a self contained unit so there's no real seal where it mounts to the engine/chassis that could leak.

Driveshaft seal? Input shaft seal? Gearbox end cover seal?

Also, try and get a few good pictures of the gearbox if you can - should help us a lot to help you out

So if they are ripping me off then what??

Im not touchy. Just really stressed and heard the people on here are really helpfull

Hate it when women say "I'm a woman so I know nothing about cars"

And then complain when we say "Stupid woman, doens't know a thing about cars".

Emma, I'd take the car back to the gearbox centre that originally changed the gearbox. If it's failing after a year it should still be in warranty and you have every right to get it sorted for free. Unfortunately you won't sell it in the current state so get it sorted now before it gets any worse.

Yes it sounds like they are ripping you off - but give us more info and we'll try and help out.

Pictures of underside of gearbox would help.

    What does your invoice say?

Gear linkages won't make the gearbox leak fluid (rarely - ive never seen it personally)

If they are ripping you off, then take the car elsewhere, to a place who will not discriminate towards men wearing a dress.

I will get my fella to try and take some pics when he finishes work
    thanx

Could be the actual box casing is cracked and leaking, or the end cover on the box. Jack it up and look for a leak.

I dont know anything about cars!! I just dont. The garage who changed the gearbox in the first place are no longer open. So cant take it back

Im not home atm but will have a look at the invoice when i get back.

In all seriousness, if you know nothing about cars, then any advice you maybe given on here, i.e technical information on gearboxes etc will just go straight over your head anyway. I don't see it helping you one bit.

I stand by my recommendation of taking someone along who knows a bit about cars, or taking it to another garage for a second opinion.

If they state the same, then the first garage are not ripping you off.

Oh, and if your fella is taking pics, can I request one of you wearing a snorkel and green frog eyed wellies?

    Thanks

firstly the gear selecta will have no effect on the gearbox leaking at all so ignore that!!

i assume u mean the driveshaft oil seal as these are common on all citroen/peugeots, make sure they are using genuine parts (proper citreon seal is only £13 - i work for citroen/peugeot) and they are fitting it correctly if its not fitted flush they can pinch and leak also ask where it is leaking from because there is a tube inside the gearbox bell housing where the release bearing slides this has an oil seal inside of it and if it leaks can leak fluid from the bottom of the gearbox?

^ to sum up - leaks from input shaft seal, driveshaft seal or end case cover.

Could be leaking from the gearbox casing itself but would assume the garage wouldn't even try and 'rip' you off repairing that as it's too hard to do for a general garage

I have the invoice this is what it says

    repairs;
    Mot test and repairs
    reflector fitted to rear
    o/s fog light repaired
    o/s/f brake hose fitted correctly
    brake sensor valve changed
exhaust welded correctly to get through emissions
    rear discs and pads changed
    spark plugs changed
    o/s gearbox seal changed

    parts used
    rear markers
    gearbox oil
    38 bulb
    brake fluid
    Brake valve
    brake pipe
    brake pipe unions
    consumadles
    discs 2
    Pads set
    heat consumables
    gearbox seal

    total £ 345.79

    2nd time it went in;

    Recovery to garage

    repairs

    both gearbox driveshaft seals leaking
o/s driveshaft centre bearing not positioned correctly-fitted bearing correctly. Both seals changed refitted as required
wrong hub nut fitted to n/s drive shaft. New nut fitted

    parts used

    seals x2
    Gearbox oil
    hub nut

    total; £79.53

now they say its the gearbox selector thats causing the leak
  17. #17
And they say that they cant fix the gearbox selector
  18. #18
Only driveshaft seals - I'd get them to fix it for free, if they really kick up I'd go elsewhere, and not go back to them.

It isn't anything to do with the shifter/linkage

No, but atleast it gave you guys something to do

Take it to another garage and ask them where its leaking from, and ask for a price.

Should take them 5 minutes to see where its leaking from. They shouldn't charge for doing this.

To me it sounds like one of the driveshaft seals (which are about £15 quid) is leaking... Which is pretty easy fix. A garage shouldnt charge more than 1 maybe 2 hours labour.

    p.s. to the comedians.
One or two posts every once in a while is sometimes funny. A thread full of them from the same person is boring. Malky you're trying too hard.
