steering rack/pump

hi there guys.i was wondering if someone could tell me what sort of things would happen if the steering rack/pump was broken.

im experiencing a knocking/rumbling noise from the the front of my car.it kicks in basically as soon as i drive off and its then there all the time.the faster i go the louder and faster the noise becomes.

i initially thought it was coming from the wheels as i could feel it in both foot wells, after thinking about it could still do that as its all connected up to the steering rack but i also feel it in the dash in the middle.

the gaitor on the steering pump thing is badly damaged.also i asked my brother to sit in the car and i shaked the wheel from side to side the rack/pump is shaking quite bad well it seems to be,i know this as i have one of these myself so iam able to compare.although mine moves it doesnt alot.

whilst my brother sits in the saxo with the problem it seem to make the noise not as loud obviously as i was only shaking the wheel.whilst sitting in mine and doing the same thing no noise is heard atall.

if someone could shed some light on this that would be great, thanks guys, ill also upload a video of the noise.

Lower engine mount is at the back of engine bolts to underfloor of car and to gearbox casing where exhaust comes down and around, may be worth checking the other engine mounts as well one is under ecu and the other under battery tray
