melting handbrake cable

ok, so i took my heatshield off a while back to do some work underneath the car and snapped 3 of the 4 bolts attaching the heatshield to the car, hence the reason why i cant put it back on, damn rust!

ive just been under my car again and on the handbrake cable (outer plastic cover) there are signs of burns/melting plastic as now the heatshield is off the cable can touch my exhaust.

is there anything i can do to prevent this from happening?

    thanks

try and attach the heaet shield back on either weld it in or get some new bolts, its not a massive issue but it will start to rust after a while so once the heat shield is back on prob best to get a new cable.

just come across heat resistant tape, would that do the job if i put it round the cable?

i asked a mechanic to put it back on but he said it was a right ass of a job cause all of the carpets need to be up and new holes need drilling....

i would say get some heat resistant tape and put a good amount around the cable

your cable shouldnt reach the exhaust anyway. well mine doesnt, my heatshield is removed because the exhaust some times rattled on it.

well thats what i thought, but just before i got the car the owner said that all the brakes had been re-newed, including the handbrake cable.
i think whoever did it has not cut the cable down to size properly as there looks to be too much slack, hence why the cable can reach my exhaust.....rather annoying.

you shouldnt have to cut a handbrake cable down to size either. lol should be a direct fit mate.

I don't have the shield on mine and don't have any trouble...
as for the rattling maybe one of the cables is broke/ not connected but as said above don't need to cut it, I cant remember how the cables run now but isn't there clips that hold it to the cars chassis maybe one of them has broken....
