Gear Sloppy...

  1. #1
    Hey all..

Checked my linkages and it doesn't seem to be this...

The Shifter bit on the back of the box has loads of play / Movement in it so it appears to be this..

Is there a way this can be put right?

I'm spending a day on the car this week and so it'd be nice to sort this out too, save me some cash on linkages that i don't really need..

    Cheers

Sounds like its the split pin. Is there a lot of side to side movement in the stick when its in gear? Cost about £2 from citroen. Only thing is you have to take the box out to change it. I've read someone did it with the box still on but have no idea how they managed it.

I just bought the pin that we think it is for 38p from Peugeot, does look like there's a decent enough space but will soon see when I have a go!

Linkages are definately fine and I can definately see this bit moving though don't understand how this pin can make such a difference but worth a 38p go!

It seems mad that such a small bit of metal and costs so little can make that big of a problem.

It wears away from use which means it doesn't sit as snug when in gear, thus the extra play.

There are two types of pin. Did you get the solid pin one or the cone shaped one that looks like a flat bit of metal bent round into a circluar shape? Sorry if that makes no sense to you.

Yeah its the second type mate, like a cone, fatter one end then gets bigger (Might be smaller, its in the car lol), with a slit down the middle...

Ahh thats the better one but citroen decided not to use them but put the solid ones on cars leaving the factory for some stupid reason!

Ah its the better one? bargain at 38p then, lets hope its the right part and i can do it - Beats the hell outta £45 on gear linkages haha!

Oh, that axle you have for sale, does it have ABS sensors and loom with it?

Yeah it is mate and definitely a hell of a lot cheaper. Its a really easy job with the box off but let me know how you get on with it still on the car

My beam doesn't but....my brothers got a vts beam that has both sensors and one or both are only 6 months old or so. I can try and get them off but i know they are hard to get off without damaging them. It comes with a foot or so of cable with blue connectors on the end if thats what you mean by loom?

Yeah that's what I mean by loom mate, if you could then that would be good, unless the whole axle is going cheap, as it looks like I may need hubs too unless mine has abs pickups but no sensors and loom...

    Cheers

Ahh ok, well I'll try and get them out. He is keeping that beam as its going on his car. He is however getting a gti in a few days which he is taking the engine from then breaking. It has a refurbed rear beam aparently, will confirm when we get it.

He'd probably take £100 if you got it at the start of next week? Less if it hasnt been refurbed maybe £70

Oh fair play, it's not cherry red per chance? Lol

And in which case if he breaks I may be interested in rear hubs, abs sensors and loom as opposed to whole axle

That doesn't surprise me haha I'm only young so didn't know it has been a problem for years.

    Still havent done this...

Kinda not convinced that its even this!

I wanna do the gearbox oil anyway, so i'm thinking of dropping the lower mount off, then the gearbox mount and lowering the engine onto a jack to give me a load more clearance...

Just hope this is going to be enough, and gonna solve my problem - This and the quickshift i've ordered and i won't know myself!

What's the part number for the bit you've ordered? I've got the same problem on mine. Also I've been told there's a how to guide for changing these, any ideas where?

did this problem make it really hard for you to select certain gears
