MOT question

  1. #1
I recently had my droplinks renewed at the garage to try to solve this knocking noise. but with no luck i asked the garage what this might be, the mechanic said that it may be coming from the lower ball joints or lower engine mount.

well okay il replace them (im thinking of getting an upgraded lower engine mount from here or ebay)

but the lower ball joints come on an arm that are £70 each! X(

so i said not to worry and ill come back. but then he said it will fail an MOT, which is due this month, as you can probally tell by now, im no mechanic.

    Advise people........

    thanks

hi, if theres play in the bushes then yes it will fail. but im pretty sure you can get both front arms with the bushes on ebay for about 60 quid, ill post a link.

surely it cant fail an MOT if they dont really know what is causing the noise?

its not the noise that will fail it . . .

cant see it, cant fail it.

but if they see the play or anything fouling another item, then yes it will fail.

Had excessive play in my ball joint mate had to replace lower arm, was a bastard. Failed my MOT on that, tis expensive just to replace it.

If he is telling you it's going to fail.. He is assuming that he will find the noise... So why doesn't he move his arse and find it now? Sounds like a twat to me mate.

I'd get a second opinion actually, be wary to listen to him telling you to change things.. If you buy 2 lower arms and it's not the cause.. You'll be kicking yourself.

if there is play in anything, then it will fail.
so advice to the OP will be to check for any play, by jacking the wheel up and holding it at a 9 and 3 and rocking the wheel, and at a 12 and 6 and again rocking the wheel.
i will also then advise to spin the wheel and hold your coil spring with your finger and thumb, to check your bearing.

then ,you can rule out any play in balljoints, drop links, track rod ends, and bearings and cv joints.

if there is play in your engine mount, there isnt much of a chance for the average person to tell as they have nothing to be able to move the engine in away to tell. unlike during an MOT when a car is on shaker plates.

but can you explain the knock any more, all the time, only when accelerating, only when slowing down, when you brake, when you turn, when youre sat still ? . . .

and if you think lower arms are expensive and a bastard to fit...then you were seen comming.

the knocking noise is when i turn at slow speeds, obviously never tried turning on full lock at high speeds lol.

depends how much play is in the ball joint, if its slight it might be an advise but if its a the point is hangin out it will fail

If there's play in the ball joint just buy a new ball joint and get it pressed in, it'll cost no more than £10 to fix

Absolutely no need to buy a complete new wishbone

most places charge to get them pressed in

    got to be either:

    drop links
    ball joints
    strut top bearings
dampers loose in strut(i have a reccurring same problem)
    track rod end

most likely strut top banrgs or drop links, or as mine, retaining nut on strut works ever so slightly loose, and the dmaper moves about 1mm eac way when turning, causing a "knock" or "crack"
