OE spec disks and pads? Which to choose?

  1. #1
Hey guys, just want to know everyones thoughts on standard size disks and pads setups...

Currently had mintex disks and pads all around now for 2 years and they are poo! Always breaking early and mashed a gearbox up from always engine breaking..

So im thinking of the OEM spec brembo disks and EBC redstuff pads?

Which turns out roughly £70 for the front

Would like to know what eveyrones views are and what they are running at the same kind of price..

Aftermarket pads and discs are pants that includes.. Mintex, APEC, pagid, brembo, ferodo textar and couple of others.
They are still half decent like, and miles better than some of the cheap shit available on the market today.

Now the above makes I've mentioned people will argue an say they are very good etc which is fine that's there opinion, I work for a motor factor and my dads junior exec at Delphi which is a very big o/e make and is used widely by garages etc. So I've seen the tests to say otherwise. The above makes do have some cars they supply o/e so textar are o/e on some BMW and mercs, same goes for pagid and mintex. They all have a few company's they supply as o/e but that's it the rest is aftermarket crap so like your finding with the mintex. Don't get me wrong the performance stuff is great so like mintex pagid and ferodo all have performance stuff which is a good product. But on a standard aftermarket replacement it's crap.

They are all called ecr90 pads which do a 6hour test which incs about 5 tests before put on the Market.
Now an o/e discs or pad will have to do a 6month test and carry out twice as many tests before put on te Market. That's the difference in quality.

Main suppliers I recommend if your after a good o/e replacement would be Delphi or Bosch, I use Delphi and a 266mm set up and it's fine for normal use and a bit if stick round the lanes. I'll be fitting something like the redstuffs for track of course.
But Delphi and Bosch have the o/e stuff in there boxes so it's exactly the same as what you get from Citroen and Peugeot but at half the price.
For starters Bosch don't make the discs n pads in there boxes, they made do for a couple of vehicle manufacturers, but on the while they just buy from who ever is original equipment, so if its Lucas on one vehicle Bosch will just buy it from them etc etc, Delphi do a similar thing,
So on the whole your getting the o/e stuff in the box from them. So that should do you? Depends how you drive and what you useyour car for. If it's always driven hard and may see a track day then something like the stuff kam sells is what you'd want.

That's just my opinion, sorry for the essay I'm a little bored waiting for me dinner lol.

Wow, well what can I say, thankyou!

So basicly, the aftermarket brands attempting OE specifications is just fail.
Stick with the companies who only deal with OE specification as they will be at the top of the game in quality, testing etc..

I do a lot of lanes and national speed single carriage way so I do want the best setup without uprating the brakes. I have killed 2 foxes and a badger whilst breaking and I feel that there is definatley something there to do with poor disks and pads (the 2 year old mintex)

Any ideas on what the redstuff pads lifetime is like?

dont know much about whats available for a saxo but do not get ebc, brake fade is bad across all EBC pads.

ive never had a problem using mintex and if you say the pads are 2years old surely that gives you an indication they need changing, i change mine 1 a year on the f/r as it only costs £100 well worth the money to do.

chris that was a interesting read mate

I buy mintex disc and pad kit for about £35 off ebay and fit it myself.

My local factors deals mainly in Delphi, used quite a lot of their parts, never had a problem.

Engine braking will not damage a gearbox. Thats down to either worn components or bad driving technique.

As for the brakes. If they have not been bedded in correctly then they could have been overheated and glazed early on and so are rubbish. At best they are only going to be as good as standard anyway which when combined with standard suspension is not all that great. The manufacturer will have little bearing. OE is OE
