bad news on arrival logbook

    hi all
had a problem getting my logbook as last owner claims he sent it but dlva never received it.just had to tax the car and fill in a form for a new logbook.

now its turned up on the front of the v5 in the special notes section it states

"substantially repaired and/or accident damaged;identity checked". with a date of the v.i.c check.

i was never told by the private seller about this is there any thing i could do or is it just tough luck on me for not doing any type of hpi tests . the date the vic check took place is 3 weeks after the previous owner acquired the car so he did know about it

i'm guessing it was a cat c damaged as cat d does not need the v.i.c test

any idea what sort of damage would cause a cat c on a 2001 vts

crisp packet could have blown into it... doesnt take much

yes you can take him to court for not declaring it, it is illegal for him not to tell you, and as it ad the check done in his possesion he has no way of denying it

It could be anything, cat c is a wide berth but its clearly been repaired for fit road use

damage wise on a car of that age as said above a very light incident would deem it Cat C
contradicting what is said above if the seller was a private indivdual you cannot do anything about the misleading sale as its private and the onus was on you to check
however if you think he is a trader then by law as a trader he is legally bound to disclose such information

I wouldnt worry to much about what the damage was other than ensuring it was repaired to a satisfactory standard get someone who knows a bout cars to cast an eye over it

ok cheers for the above posts

car seems fine but after having a mate whos good with bodywork had a look at it he reckons the front bumper dont quite line up with the headlights

and after searching around we have found a tiny bit of over spray on the driver side of the windscreen plus tiny bits of masking tape holding the bottom grill in the bumper.

chassis legs, boot floor, seals etc and panels around radiator look straight and correct so hes pretty sure it was drivers wing/front bumper damage.

so not to worried just will be a pain to sell it on in the future

not necessarily a pain to sell on I deal in salvage repaired Saxo's have done for 3 years and declare everyone sold they take a little longer to sell sometimes and usually at a lower price than non salvage when the time comes just advertise as cat C recorded if you want to upfront.
Or just do as you had done to you not that I advocate that

Also worth pointing out that there are a lot cars that have had far worse damage repaired that dont show up on Insurance salvage register

I bought a vtr that I no longer have and it said the same on my log book but I think it had a front end bump as the bonnett didn't line up above the wheel arch but that's normal on most saxos and after about 2 weeks of having it the wheel bearing went so changed it and in less than 2 weeks I went through 3 wheel bearings so had the arm and hub changed and problem solved, I part exchanged it plus cash for my gti and the buyer was satisfied with it.
