Shaking at speed

Had a quick search found nothing...

Basically, when I do about 70, the car vibrates like hell! Like immensely bad. I've had the wheels balanced, and it helped but nothing. I know my dampers are on their way out but I'm sure that won't be it. Speeds upto 70 its perfectly fine, but just at 70 onwards... Anyone with any ideas?

i have the same problem mate, my wheel bearings have recently been replaced, new shocks and springs, top mount bearings are okay, track rod ends seem fine, and my wheels have been balanced a couple of months ago when new tyres fitted.
ive got new drop links to fit this weekend to see if it will make a difference, bottom ball joints are fine as my wish bones were replaced last year, so i recon either drop links or driveshafts. or my ball joints might need tightening abit on the pinch nut.

will let you know if the drop links sort it

What`s the condition like of your wheels?Meaning are they buckled in any way?

I've changed one of my drop links and it helped a tad, but not much

The wheels are ok, nothing was mentioned when they were beig balanced

its most likely the wheel balancing, take it back to them a recheck is usually free although if you have R or S wheels they're solid centres (no centre caps) not all garages can balance these so make sure they have a balancer to accomodate them

I'd get the wheels checked properly. Fiesta does the same and that's because the wheels are all bent.

my wheels are perfectly straight and true.
mine has also only starting doing this since i lowered it 40mm, had the tracking done as it was out after the lowering and its still vibrating at motorway speeds.

im guna try drop links, then if its still doing it, the only thing left is driveshafts :/

why dont you just sit at over 70 all the time then?

you have more chances of crashing.

a few people have said that they might be buckled and such. god i hope not!

Buckling is a possibility, its what happened to me..

I'd have the balancing re-checked. It's either that, a buckled wheel or a dead tyre (check for bulges on the sides, happened to me once). In the 2 latters, the car would pull to one side.

you've had the wheela balanced, but did you get the tracking done, like laser alignment, even if the toe in/out is slightly off, can cause some back shaking

ive had this done and mine still does it.

so in my case it has to be either drop links or drive shafts, its the only thing that isnt new :/

agree. check drop links first as its slightly cheaper to fix, if you can get away without replacing driveshafts, ideal.

    tracking could help for O.P.

Check your wheels are straight as well then

Get them on a solid bar and spin them. look for flat spots etc.

you had all the wheels balanced or was it a garage who said only the fronts needed doing?

when i had my VTS alloys, there was nothing. as soon as i put the TD 1.2s, they needed spigot rings and drove for about a week without them. i got them, then got all 4 wheels balanced. someone told me to swap the front and backs and try that. but ive also been told a possible wheel bearing?

I've got exact same problem and it's pissing me off. I've had the wheels balanced, new drop links, new track rod ends, new pads and discs all around and new wishbones. Also had tracking and balancing re-done. However yesterday, my driver's side front spring snapped. I'm hoping this has been the problem.

Edit: Also tried swapping rear wheels to the front. No difference what so ever.
