hard left - *KNOCK*

  1. #1
    hi
in my 02 VTR whenever i make a slow turn to the left i get a huge *knock* noise from what sounds like my drivers side suspension strut
    what could cause this?
its rather annoying as its frequent if not always there!

    help!

It could be a worn strut top bearing or a worn wishbone.

    hmm
i have had spax -40mm dampers and springs fitted since around may
how could i check these components?
could the 16mm nut under the floor be useful here?
ive never found that, however ive never looked!

Your best off getting it up on a 4 poster ramp at a garage,by the 16mm nut the only 1 I can think of would be the wishbone nut/bolt.Plus i`m sure there`s 2 of them you have to take the carpet up to see them.

    Ok
I'll try the 16mm nuts first then see what happens!

    Thanks

Could be ball joint, check there's not a load of grease inside your wheel.

    Definitely not that
I've taken the wheels off frequently recently and considering they're White alloys, I've not noticed anything out of the order!

or track rod end. if the rubber is soft it will be one of them,

Can anyone help me do these checks as in show me where to check?
Ive heard of the parts just not sure where they are

    Thanks

This is still happening, exactly as described!
    Any ideas?

Had this diagnosed as a strut top bearing/mount - time for a change!

    shaft, top mount bearing ect

If its more then one knock then its probably the driveshaft.

If not then get someone to look when you stop, if the wheel moves forward in the arch then its most likely wishbone bushes.

If neither it could be top mounts as people have said above

Had it checked, it was a top mount / need to get it changed

More then likely be the damper coming loose in the strut, makes the damper move a mm or so and gives off a nice crack when you turn

Seems common on the spax, mine do it untill you tighten the retainer cap again

Hmm could check that too when having the strut mount replaced!

Male sure it's not the arb link. Often missed in diagnosing a knock. But the simplest and cheapest to replace.

Will probably have drop links changed too!
Had arb bushes changed recently for powerflex variants

Mines doing the same thing and its the steering rack worn ! But makes it look like its coming from the strut

    Oooo don't say that!
Suppose I could have the mount and drop links changed and see if it's gone!!

Had both drop links and both strut top mounts changed - still a knock however not as frequent
Been told it's because I'm lowered - always the reason!
Otherwise, maybe the spring pans weren't cleaned - or it's something else!!
