Whining when accelerating

  1. #1
Cars started whining when accelerating...can hear it the most between 10k and 30k and gets higher pitch the high up the revs you go.

Sounds like the cars electric or similar to a new mini.

Any ideas?? its a mk2 vts btw on 90,000

Could be gearbox, wheel bearing maybe.

My car sounded supercharged when my diff went in my gearbox..

Slowly accelerate in 1st gear.. then let it fall back down the rev's.. if it's noisy.. your box is on it's way out. (Y)

Or could be a dry alternator..

Surprised you have a engine when it can rev to 30k

With the amount of dodgy boxes in circulation, I'd say you're better off having a specialist strip the box down and replace the bearings etc.

how much do you reckon that would cost? was thinking of getting an xsi box to improve acceleration?

Bearing and seal kit is around £70 from Fasttrack Bearings. If you want to replace the synchro rings, you can get all five from a Citroen/ Pug dealer for around £80.

Then probably a couple of hours labour? Gearbox specialist I use charges £30 + VAT an hour IIRC.

XSI box would help acceleration, but if you think about the typical age and mileage on them, it's not going to be much better than what you have... unless it's been completely overhauled. If you go down the route of rebuilding yours, you could fit a 1.1 or XSI crownwheel and pinion shaft into your box to essentially give you an 'XSI' box.

an over tightened cambelt can create a whinning noise aswel iirc

but surely a cambelt wouldnt just suddenly get too tight?

When my gearbox went.. same noise as yours, lasted about 3 months then gears would grind if it went over or under a certain rev's..

Replaced it with a gearbox off a rear ended 1.1 106 for £20.. been on for over 20k, no noise's and still solid.. Love how fast it goes through the gears .

XSI boxes aren't the best for a lot of motorway use either

hmm would a furio, vtr or s2 rallye box give any acceleration gains?

    alternator belt i reckon mate

check your belt pulleys. i had a mate when had a smililar problem and it was is alternator pulley bearing gone causeing it to sound supercharged

As said it will more than likely be the cambelt tensioner or could be a lil tight.
Mine did it when I had cambelt changed a few weeks back so took it back and they sorted it in 10mins.
Mine was that loud that when I accelerated you could hear the whining noise over my exhaust system and that's a lil loud.

i have same problem but was told the car had recent gearbox put in so not sure it if could be that, would it be easy to find the actual problem out?
