Alternator problems.

Hey guys, got a Mk2 51 plate VTR here, alternator is whining it seems. Was intermittent, and so I thought it was the belt when it was damp. Changed belt and it's still making that noise. So I presume it's alternator bearing(s).

First question, will an alternator from a 1.1, Furio, VTR or VTS fit as long as the wiring is the same, ie same year?

Secondly, how tight should the belt be once fitted? I don't know if I fitted the new belt too tight and made the bearings worse by running it like that.

A quick response would be really really appreciated, need to pop down scrap yard this afternoon ideally as it's for a mate.

    Many thanks in advance.

It`s not just the wiring you need to check it`s also the amps & pulley(ribbed or single grooved)

Copyied n pasted my reply from the other thread u posted on..

Sure the VTS's use a diff alternator.. Read of some people on here converting to a VTR alternator to make more room for turbo's etc.

However.. the other alternators off other models fit, just make sure the mounting point's are the same.. and it'll be fine.

I put a mk1 VTR alternator onto my mk2 VTR.. The wiring off my loom had a 2-pin connector, the new (old) alternator used the washer type connections.. so I simply cut the end off and crimped 2 washer type ends.. works perfect.

For tightness.. should still be able to move the belt <5mm with your finger when it's tightened.. Doesn't need to be silly tight, if it sounds like it's slipping (screeching) then tighten it up a tad more.

Hope this helps.. just take your alternator to the scrappy with you, if the mounting point's are the same.. it'll fit and work.. just do what i said with the wires if it's a different set-up
