The crack noise can sometimes be a worn cv joint on the driveshaft.

My PAS pump has always made a noise like that, never noticed anything wrong with it, I haven't a clue on the cracking noise though lol

Sorry to hijack, mine whines really loudly when i start up and then after around 15 seconds it stops and the PAS works fine, anyone know what it could be?

I had the same thing on an old R and it eventually stopped working

an old r of mine made that loud whining noise before the pas broke. could be on the way out...

Whining noise? Check fluid level. I think they all make some amount of 'humming noise' but anything that sounds mechanical cant be ignored or it will get expensive and or dangerous.
    Good luck!

My power steering makes a humming noise and that seems to be the only time the actual power steering works lol.
