Brake servo problems?

I think i have a problem with brake servo, had bonnet up earlier and with engine running i could hear a sort of whistling noise from brake servo area, had a bit of a fiddle around behind servo with a rubber boot and it seemed to reduce the noise but i have no idea what the problem may be so does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to cause or what i can do to sort it out
