In terms of oil grades ie, 10w/ 40w

What would be a thicker oil?

Basically I need to put thicker gearbox oil in my car to quieten it down as I can't get my new gearbox till I get paid.

It's not the release bearing before people start slating me lol,

Just need a simple answer as I'm already decided on my method to fix my problem.

    Cheers

Yh I was just giving an example of the ratings of grades.

All I need to know is say 5 / 40 w oil thicker than 10 / 40w oil? This is just for example

no 10w/40 is thicker.... the W stands for "winter" in other words the viscosity (thickness/resistance) when cold.

Iirc citroens recommended gear oil is 75w/80, i wouldnt recommend putting in thicker oil..

    what exactly is your problem?

So expanding on this 5w/40 and 10w/40 are both exactly the same when upto temperature, the ten is just very slightly thicker when the engine is first started.

and so 75W/80 which goes in the box means 75 at cold, 80 at hot.

    Etc. etc. etc.
