Changing discs n pads ?

  1. #1
Need to know what discs and pads to get. Last time I put some cheap ones on from the local auto spares shop. Not doing that again, they just have constantly made noise and dust from day one. Now they're squaling round corners so they are going to have to come off.

I want some good discs and pads all round for normal road usage that wont make a bloody racket when i pull up or drive and dont create so much crap on my wheels. Also for as cheap as possible.

I use mintex variants on my road car, ferrodo on track currently. Dont think you can go wrong sticking to a good brand like those but it depends what you want from the car

I just want it in good order mate. I like to make my car look nice but i dont track it or anything or rag it around the roads. As you say something like mintex sounds ok for everyday use.

Bsaically i just want the best value i can get. I know value sometimes means crap but what ever i put on them they cant be as bad as what i already have. Theyve been on the car less than 8 months and im running low on the back pads quite badly.

you did clean the discs before fitting them first ... just checking.

yeah, my mate whos a merc specialist fitted them first and he even said they looked a bit shit, i seen him clean them all up though. Not so long Afterwards to make sure it was all OK, me and Gazer off here checked them over then took the offending wheel of re applyed more copper grease to the backs of pads but theres still a god awful squeal when turning right. They stop OK, passed an MOT not so long ago but i just hate the noise and dust i get with them.

Brembo OE Spec are pretty cheap. Front Brembo discs are £22 and Brembo OE Brake Pads £28

(ignore the listing as being the Pug 106 gti. Seems I have not set up these for the VTR/VTS and its the same part.)

While the pad compound may not be better braking than standard, by buying a big name brand like Brembo you have the assurance that every set will be consistent in braking performance so you dont get poor batches in manufacture. Cheap manufactures have poor quality control whereas Brembo is high enough quality that they make braking products on cars rolling out the showroom.

I'm running Brembo discs and pads on my Clio 172 and could not be happier. I dont really need anything else for a daily driver.

Forgive me if you did, but please tell me you applied copper grease to the backs of the brake pads?

This is something that should be done when fitting any brake pads to eliminate brake squeel

yeah there was mate but it seemed to make no difference. I think its just the type of pad. Maybe they bedded in crap or something. To go this low so soon really says it all.

Either way they were really cheap crap. Bought because i didnt have much money at the time.

Kam i might well do. So your saying those discs and pads are suitable for a VTR even thought the pads are marked as 106.
