50mm????

Me nd my bro want to lower our saxo's 50mm each, but as we are both skint buying new shocks isnt realy an option. can you go without new shocks at 50mm without major wear? chiz
  2. #2
it is possible. not sure how well your ride comfort/handling will be. also, apparently apex 50mm springs dont sit right without the apex dampers

i have apex 50mm springs on my vts and they sit fine. obviously the ride wont be the best on standard dampers but you could get away with it i guess. im changing to spax 60mm springs soon and il be changing the dampers for sure.

ahhh thanx, will defo go 50. jus got to buy a decent pair!

i'm down 60 on spax and my shocks are fine and have been for over a year. and there is lots of speed bumps and bad roads round my way. it depends on how you drive

How? They are designed for the standard spring platforms. Theres nothing clever about spring design. The only issue would arise if the car is literally sitting on the bumpstops leaving the spring loose in the housing as the damper cannot compress enough.

i remember seeing in a thread krisb saying he had trouble

well when people swap to aftermarket springs and dampers they dont replace the spring platforms. The flaw would persist with whatever dampers are fitted if there was a fault with the springs.

    that makes sense...

So what your saying is most lower after market springs dont sit right on stock front shocks and are too small for the shock to push them down?
  11. #11
The issue is people should not cheapskate.
If you want to go 50mm or lower you need shortened dampers. Basically you are at maximum compression of the standard dampers and they simply cannot get low enough. Either because you are sitting on the bumpstop or the damper shaft cannot physically move further down.

but if ur on a very tight budget u dont realy hav much chioce!!

I was down 60mm on standard dampers for a good year or so, no leaks or anything when we took the standard dampers out.

It'll handle better than with standard springs, that's what I found, but when you can afford to uprate the dampers too, it'll be even better.

The springs do fit the cars, but depending on what shocks the car has got (most likely standard!) the springs springs are too short. And rattle about when everythings back together. Fine when the cars on the ground though, you just have to make sure it all lines up and the topmounts locate properly when letting the vehichle down. I should imagine if someone launched their car over a bridge then the springs may be dislodged.

i have 60mm spax on mine car and there very little give in suspension if not non at all .... so if your going get 50mm springs then new dampers would be good idea.

Ive MOT'ed loads of lowered cars and as cowboy as it sounds ....cable tie your springs in so if a bridge situation does happen there not going anywhere.

I do that anyway steve, although i still cant be held responsible if the springs become dislodged. Only the apex that is.
