Important! : Mk1 VTR Engine Problem

  1. #1
    Alright guys,

Having a spot of trouble with my VTR.

Recently changed my fuel filter on my car and now it won't start, when i turn engine over its cranks but then just stops dead and battery dies.

I've had it on jump leads from a cousins car and managed to get it fired up, however it now sounds like its running on 3 cylinders. (Quick Note: Ive changed sparks, HT's, Fuel Filter and i've also put some injector cleaner in to clear them out if their blocked, better safe than sorry).

Now its not the 3 cylinder problem that has me annoyed, its the fact that the car wont start, its just cranks and then stops dead, and if im lucky it'll crank, try starting and then die.

Anyone had any experience with this problem before? Any help would be much appreciated

    Mal.

Well until I read about getting it started temporary I was going to suggest have you got the fuel filter in the correct way(with the arrow pointed towards the front of the car)?

I read somewhere that the fuel filter has to face the opposite way in the saxo, im sure it was on this site somewhere

Its just when you try to crank it over to fire it, it turns over fine until it goes to start, it just thuds to a stop shall we say :L Going to take sparks out tomorrow and test them and the HT's see if theres a problem lying there somewhere, hopefully fin a little more out. Thanks for the suggestion though, i'll do some digging on which direction filter goes :L

Thanks for the link S666, had a read through it and it sounds remarkably similar to mine, although the car was running fine before the fuel filter was changed I'd changed the sparks a couple of weeks before with HT's because of an intermittent misfiring problem that only appeared when giving the car the beans As I mentioned above, i'll have a better look tomorrow, weather hasn't been kind last couple of days so thought i'd ask you guys on here for advice

    Bit of an update/bump.

Checked the HT's and sparks, and i noticed that one wasn't sparking properly, so i tried another one, which did the same

So i tried another HT and spark on the dizzy cap, turns out that the top right plug (Marked 1-4) isn't working, so going to replace dizzy cap and see if that changes anything

I'll give you a heads up when i've bought another and see if its made a difference :L

Hey there hope it gets sorted mate you got any photos up yet?, gotta keep these venetians going
  9. #9
Hopefully it'll be sorted this side of Christmas :L And i know, dont see too many of them going about anymore, was going to have it resprayed white but seeing as its a colour thats getting rarer i think im keeping it
  10. #10
I did consider having mine resprayed honda championship white, then I was going to just have the vt kit done but the more I look at it the more I like the red its just a nightmare trying to get panels the right colour still need drivers wing and door and tailgate really
  11. #11
Ahh not a bad choice of colour I'd chosen the Audi R8 abyss white with a blue pearl to it and the bump strips and wheels going audi pearl black (Forgot the name of it ) We'll see when it comes to that road though :L
  12. #12
Edit: Just noticed you'd resprayed your alloys the same colour im wanting :L Audi Volcano Pearlescent Black, that colours the shit, especially when sun hits it, how much did it set you back to refurb alloys and respray them if ya dont mind me asking? And'll i'll upload some pictures of car soon as i get chance :L Been busy doing tattoo's lately :L

It is a lush colour, kinda came to it by accident in halfords, I wanted to go down the route of black wheels but I didn't want the usual plain black so I picked it up to try and didn't look back, but to answer your question it cost about 75 quid in materials and my housemate (saxo gray on here) sprayed them

Edit :- wheels haven't been refurbished properly yet there coming off over the winter to be done

Ahha the best things usually come by accident And i think it compliments the venetian red just from lookin at your pictures (Btw your car looks mega mate )

And im only asking because im planning on buying some 206 GTi nimrods, refurbing them and spraying them in that colour, but i'll be doing it with compressor and air lined spray gun with the proper auto paint, i know its more effort than its worth but gives a quality finish, you seemed to have managed it with spray cans
  15. #15
Cheers for the compliments mate the colours do seem to pretty much work perfectly together i think, you'll definitely get a better finish with compressor over rattle cans, i think mine only came out as they did because of the heat at the time (was about 6 weeks before trax) but for the money it cost i'm more than happy with the results.

Those nimrods are lush wheels as well they should look ace, get a progress thread going mate so we can see how it develops

No worries matey Im wanting to go for a clean OEM look rather than mod the fuck outta it, probably jut stick a bigger engine in when it comes to wanting more speed (Won't be VTS, more than likely V-Tech or Clio 182 if it'll fit :L) And on that note with cans again, top job buddy :Y: And i love nimrods off the 206, my mums got a 206cc with them and i tried half inching them of her with no luck

I'll get one going soon as im back at work, don't really see point in starting one when ive got no ££ to spend as it'll be a dead thread o.O

Bit of an update/bump. Fitted new ignition coil to try and fix the misfire and engine starting problem...It did the job, got rid of the misfire and now engine fires up first time every time without missing a beat, all that's left now is to get it through MOT
  18. #18
Nice one its always good to get to the bottom of a problem isn't it, good luck with the MOT

No mate its not, i was seriously considering it but i can't do it, i'm having the drivers side at least resprayed before too long and will have all the bump strips finished in volcano black, the venetian red is too nice (and rare) to be gotten rid of

And as i'm sure i have said before steve many thanks for the compliments mate its always very appreciated
  21. #21
I must agree with you there Ads, although I wasnt too keen on the colour at first it kinda grows on you after a while I must admit

That and seeing as its becoming a rarity now I think im just going to have it resprayed same colour (Venetian Red) but go for something similar to what you have done with the bump strips, although I may go down a slightly different colour route so it doesn't look like im trying to look like you

The 206 GTi nimrods are a must for me though, and probably stick a VTS in when I have car looking how I want it, speed doesn't bother me, I owned a Polo Cl Coupé 1.3 before the saxo and that wasn't exactly fast, its more about just looking clean and how they should have been from the factory

Heres a couple of pictures of my old "VW Polo Cl Coupé" to wet your whistles, might not be everyone's cup of tea mind
