starter motor, alternator or somet else

So I was driving as usual the other day with my heater, radio and window wipers on when the left side (right if ur driving) of the bonnet started smoking badly but eventually went away after turning off the heaters and radio.

Anyways I thought nothing of it till this morning untilled the car wouldn't start and when it eventually did the radio reset constantly (like it does when the car is started) and the window wipers were so much slower than usual. I parked up and tried starting my car again and it wouldnt for about ten minutes.

Soat do people think? I originally thought starter motor but because of the earlier smoking could the alternator have burnt out?

    Cheers

look i need help on this fast, more info is that the power steering cuts out at the same time as the electrics... apparantly power steering wouldnt do this if it was the alternator... does this mean it is the alternator belt that needs replacing?

My Dad's alternator broke whilst he was driving his Passat - the power steering instantly failed. He knew straight away it was the alternator. The two are definitely connected, so I'd bet it's your alternator!
