Is it my gearbox? HELP!!

I recently bought a 2001 Saxo vtr, my first saxo and I absolutely love it! Since having the car I would occasionally hear a weird grinding sound whilst driving but was rare, and never gave it much though. Over the last few days its got much worse though. From about 40mph onwards if I lift off the throttle. I get a horrible grinding noise, it almost sounds like its coming from the offside front wheel (I'm pretty sure its not though) It will also sometimes do it when I dip the clutch, but not all the time, there's no real pattern.
I'm sure its transmission related, and I've heard saxo's are prone to thrust bearings, could it be that? Or gearbox? I'm really unsure.

Same as mine gearbox fucked mate, will get worse mines been doing it for 5k miles just going to drive to it breaks.

Here's the weird thing though, yesterday the noise was pretty much constant, but today I've driven to work and back (a good 20 mile round trip) and it hasn't done it once

My first port of call would be to change the gearbox oil.

Yeah I intend to try changing the oil, fingers crossed! Out if interest though, any idea how much I could expect to pay for another box?
