vts head gasket

My head gasket has gone on my 52 plate saxo vts. I have rang round and the cheapest quote I can get is £500 without replacing the cambelt and water pump. Is this a reasonable quote?

no phone around a bit more

avoid anyone who will think about putting it back together using the old belt and pump? What if the water pump was the cause of the gasket failing in the first place?

To give a comparison, KrisB charges £440 for replacement of :

Full head rebuild, including new camshaft oil seals, valve stem seals, inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets, headgasket, head skim, new cambelt and tensioner/idlers, oil change, coolant change and new Thermostat.. Waterpump extra

Not sure why you would think about changing it without replacing the belt and at least checking out the pump, but that does seem a bit steep anyway.

Jeeze, just looked at that website and when/if my head gasket goes, I'll know where to go!

The price you found is a bit high, always replace the belt and pump with the head gasket, as said, what if it was those things that caused it to go in the first place?

The water pump and cambelt were replaced 5000 miles ago, so didnt think it would need doing.

You might as well put a new belt on it while you're there.

Get yourself a Haynes manual and a bit of common knowledge and you could do it in under a day and a half for under £200.

    Well, that's what I did.

I don't mind doing a few things but wouldn't attempt a HG change on my own unless someone was with me who had changed one before.

I would take it to a pro unless you are really confident or have done it before, no point paying twice after you balls it up by trying yourself imo.

I'd do it yourself mate, its worth it for the learning experience in the end really! Can do it for under £200 easy as said before and you know its right if you do it yourself.
