Help with engine!!

  1. #1
    Hi everyone,

New to the forum but would like to know why my VTS engine is not pulling as quick as it should be. I went in an 8v the other day and it was burning my 16v off the mark. It can get to top speed but not as quick as the 8v, this makes no sense to me. From first view i cant see any real problem with it other than the engine cutting out every now and then, any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

When was the car last serviced?

16v should pull much quicker to 'top speed' than 8v.

Remember to only do 'top speed' in legal and safe areas

what gearbox is the 16v running?

haha i try to the thing is i havent had it long but it was fine when i first got it, the gearbox feels fine it just doesnt pull as much as other vts' i have been in. Not sure when it was last serviced but is there anything i can do myself to service it?

temp air filter, waiting for a new one

    flol.

    seriously that's a shocking filter.

get a standard set up on there with an uprated panel filter and it will probably pull fine again !!!

the amount of heatsoak coming through there right now is not going to be helping your acceleration

Well its definately a 16v engine. Had to check, you wouldnt believe some of the stuff on forums on the internet lol.

I would remove that air filter asap. It looks like that could be apart of the problem.

I had a 163bhp 106 Gti, i took it on one set of rollers and i had an old shitty universal filter covered in oil and gunk on (as temporary). It lost over 20bhp on the rollers. The air filter was restricting the tb dramatically.

    What i would recommend:
    1. Get a nice new air filter, possibly a full induction kit with cold air feed
    2. Full service, mainly the fuel filter.. it could be clogged up with shit out bottom of the tank if its old. New oil, new filters etc.
    3. Thirdly i'd check what gearbox is on, find the code and search it. Gearboxs can affect acceleration dramatically, which is what Mandyslover70 was getting at.

By the way it looks like you have a 4-2-1 manifold on Although it doesn't look very new lol.

Does anyone have a clue about the cutting out? it sometimes happens when am driving or waiting at traffic lights, i have to keep the revs on sometimes to prevent it but it is becoming really annoying!

The cutting out could be several things like knackered spark plugs or as said a blocked fuel filter.Get it serviced 1st then see how it runs mate.

Cutting out sounds like MAP sensor to me, its located on the driverside of the inlet.

Either that or the Idle Control Valve, located on the throttlebody.
