Well there are alternatives - I had this dilemma a while back before having HID's. MTEC Super White H4 100W give a great white effect, and have a very similar HID effect to them when you look at them. The bulb itself is coated blue
not to give off a blue light, but because the blue colour cancels out the yellow from the halogen and gives a white colour.
I know 100W is technically illegal, but because it has a colour coating on the bulb, getting the 55W won't be as bright as normal H4 bulbs as it's blocking the light. The 100W's power through the colour coating a lot better, so you get bright white-ish lights

The bulbs look a little blue-ish in the pictures, they're actually white with a nice blue sparkle to them. MTEC Super White's give the above effect, whilst MTEC Cosmo Blue give a more deeper HID effect, similar to 8000k HID's.
Don't forget though, they only 'look' better - they don't actually improve brightness at all.
