Crashed...

  1. #1
Ok, so basically, unfamiliar road, slightly damp, almost bald front tyres = car sideways in a very deep ditch.
now the car is out, it runs, but otherwise i think it may be fucked. the front bumpers wrecked, and it sounds like the exhaust sheared off, but the biggest problem is the strut under the radiator is bent in, almost touching the block. Now i know the rest is easily repairable, but can i fix the strut by welding a new one in? or is the rest of the chassis compromised?
  2. #2
As in the bottom cross member?

They can be cut out and a new one welded in, may need jigging but not sure. Post up some pictures so we can laugh
  3. #3
driving like a tit i take it..

shit man thats not good at all.

as said above you can cut that out and weld in a new one.

ican get the one of my scrapper if it'll help you out mate.

but i would recomend getting it on a jig first.
  5. #5
thats just it, the engine and everythings fine, ill take it to the local garage, see if they can jig it, expect to see a wanted add soon! :L

    ill get pictures up tomorrow.

as for driving like a tit, in a sense, yeah i guess i was, basically didnt know the road, slowed down to 45 for a corner that was marked with one chevron, and the front understeered just the slightest bit, as soon as the wheel hit the grass, i pulled the handbrake, the car just perched on the edge of this ditch, about a foot from a tree :/ from the outside it literally just looks like the front bumpers bent in, but like i said, cross member and exahaust arent looking too good.

F13sta, ill definately give you a shout if i need it, thanks alot
  6. #6
Driving with almost bald/bald tyres=no grip.
  7. #7
front crossmember is cheap enough new from citroen tbh, front end of the chassis legs may need jacking out slightly as they usually pull in slightly when crossmember bends
  8. #8
yeah its only like £7? from a quick search i did anyway its if the chassis legs are bent that i'm going to realy shit myself, i cant believe the damage just from some dirt!

Yeah, the tyres were legal still, but just so shit that it had nothing, and i just wasnt thinking :/

i need to be able to drive soon though, else my job is on the line, so im looking at a k reg 106 and an m reg micra (FUCKING hate micras... failed my driving test because of one), i guess breaking the saxo would help bring more money towards a car, but i cant bring myself to do it, even for a 1.1
  9. #9
oh, as for the exhaust, its just the lambda sensor and its housing thats pulled out, i can weld that back in piece of piss
  10. #10
Horrible feeling mate and the majority of us have been there at some point.
Learn from it, get the car sorted or replaced and get back behind the wheel. Don't worry though, its just one of those things and couldve been worse.
  11. #11
    i lol'd.

    srs.

  14. #14
haha, yeah trust me i wouldnt be looking at the micra if i broke it, ive got enough for that now.... i just dont fucking want one!
  15. #15
Break the Saxo & buy a tandem

  16. #16
OOH. just found a mk1 polo, rough but nice £350 with 6 months mot...
  17. #17
ok guys.... is this the right part? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-SA...item5890561d3d

thing is, it looks like theres some brackets higher up nearer the lights that are bent, i figured these were part of the cross member but it doesnt look like it.... wish i took the pictures now!
  18. #18
looks like thats the one, but sure someone will correct me if im wrong

if the car is at yours, post some pics up then people can tell you what you will need.
  19. #19
i will do as soon as i get the bumper off.... works giving me shitty hours lately :/
  20. #20
come on, get some pics up!

don't agree with holdaway much but yeh, happens to us all.
  21. #21
1st thing get some decent tyers, bold ones are lethal.

Did the lexus lights end up in the ditch as every dark cloud has a silver lineing!
  22. #22
im getting the bumper off in the next hour or so, ill get some pictures then.
and im afraid the lexus lights are still there, and i want smoked/tinted jewels but after this, i wont be able to afford them for a few weeks :L
  23. #23
have u got any pics while it was in the ditch
  24. #24
of course i dont, was more worried about getting it out, you perverted fuck
unfortuinately no piuctures im afraid guys, i left my phone in the ditch :@ ill sort something out, but need to roll it into the shed as soon as my dad clears all the tractors out for me to have some workspace.
  25. #25
bold budgets.... You would have had more grip if you had fitted ice skates to your car.
  26. #26
i know, pisstake was i have 4 new tyres on the alloys i was going to put on that day, but was waiting till sunday for my insurance renewal -.-
  27. #27
Was inevitable going by your previous posts...
  28. #28
i have two threads, one where i said about a close call, and one where i wanted to learn more about handling the car in these sort ofcircumstances. to judge someones entire driving capabilities on a couple of words on a website is small minded to say the least

You just had your licence, had a few close shaves and got pulled by the police for doing 50 in a 30. No disrespect but "learning the handling of a car" on bold tyres is also small minded dude. On the plus side, it may teach you a lesson. If not then you are likely to crash or get caught again. And buy some proper tyres, budgets don't cut it for "testing" purposes.

Looks like Hellfrauds specials takamichinogrips to me mate.... Where's the valve?

Clearly ragging it in his 1.1 powarrrrr

Budget tyres are for budget driving.....slowly in the dry

If you wanna drive like a cock, get some decent tyres to lessen the chances of injuring other people......I couldn't give a fuck about yourself in all honesty
  31. #31
fair enough, and those ones are hankook ventus's, so not exactly dogshite
tbh mate, im not here to please anyone, if you dont know me or how i drive, i dont expect you to think anything more, but both the near miss and this accident, i was going under the limit but in bad conditions, and that was the only time i was speeding through any sort of village/town, do you think id bother posting a thread if it was a regular occurance?

Not exactly legendary either, they're for nice and quiet driving. http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Ha...entus-K104.htm. And still, no valve and no signs of balancing, that's gonna be handy. Push them and they will fail you, period.

Have your car thoroughly checked by a real mechanic instead of just going for cosmetic repairs. Have the chassis inspected, wishbones, wheels etc. Everything checked. I'm pretty sure you have more damage than your wishful approach. All the people and mates I heard of having similar crashes, all of them fucked the chassis and the car ended as a write off every single time. Your car would be a surprising exception, I wouldn't even bother trying to fix it.
  33. #33
Just thought I would point out that the valve is at the bottom if you can't see it.. lol
  34. #34
oh yes I see it now lol
  35. #35
Why did you pull the handbrake?

I've seen some of your previous posts and knew this would happen.

    Zero sympathy from me.

Sounds like your car is a wreck, better off breaking it for parts and buying a new one.

If the cross member is completely bent up, as bad as you say, then i would be very very very suprised if your front chassis legs arent fucked.

i wondered the same thing, no wonder he ended up in a ditch pulling the handbreak!

slow down next time op and learn from it!

i crashed my 1.1 in to a tree speeding and it was a fucking mess but i was also the first one to put my hands up and admit i was 100% at fault.
  41. #41
    damask is DK you know.
  42. #42
you crashed because you didnt powaaar over after ripping the E-brake
  43. #43
mistyped. the wheel hit the grass, the car just skidded straight off but was going straight for a tree, as soon as i realised it wasnt going to stop, i pulled the handbrake and counter steered to try and bring the back around and level it off, luckily there was enough grass verge to do it.

im not just gonna whack a new bumpet on and make do am i im basically getting it all off so i can see exactly what i need, then the guy from out local garage to check the chassis legs, if they are bent in a bit, i'll jack them out, but if theyre twisted at all i'm leaving it, same if i do fix it and it doesnt feel the same, im just going to break it

also, valve is at like 7 oclock in that picture (how do you expect to get a tyre with no valve??) and ballancing is done on the inside of the wheel, only ones with a serious ofset would be balanced on the outside.... manu, do actually know anything, or do you just see actual helpful posters on here and aspire to be like them?
  46. #46
    Cut your losses now tbh

(the irony) I do know stuff, then you don't seem to face the truth like a grown up: the way you described it, your car is a wreck. No amount of knowledge is gonna put it back to it's former glory. Get over it and make sure you slow down next time instead of testing the limits of your car on bald tyres and wet tarmac. What kind of a driver rips the handbrake in a curve on the grass anyway.
  47. #47
well fair enough pal, im still going to try and fix it because tbh i think i can, if not, its not exactly a ton of money ive wasted on it, and i can just break it.

and by pulling the handbrake, i managed to slide the car around and avoid a tree, so id say i did the best i could there.

As for the crash itself, gutted that im off the road, and i'd be pissed off if people i knew thought i was a shit driver, but the people whove actually beeen in a car with me know im not, ive told this forum about the couple of times i was a right tit, it creates an opinion that you all have now.

still out of intrest manu.... a tyre with no valve??? balancing on the outside of an alloy? where have you ever seen that?
  48. #48
smart phone screen with poor contrast made that valve invisible.

    Quote:

everywhere. Lost count of how many times.

    suit yourself.

If you had effectively done the best you could, your car would still be in one piece

Totally agree you might think you`ve repaired when in fact you`re driving a death trap. That is a danger to you & other road users if you had of hit someone & the insurance inspector had came out then your insurance would probs have been void with bald/nearly bald tyres.
  50. #50
3rd party anyway, and it wouldnt be void as all the tires were still legal.
If its anything less than perfect when its fixed, then im breaking it
  51. #51
bald but legal. Lawwll. I would like to see some pictures of the damage.

Yeah I thought about that too, he's lucky not to have the police and insurance involved and coming back later to find the car wrapped in caution tape. Or even have third party people with injuries. Funny how he points the finger back at me really.

All my friends ended in a ditch shortly after passing their test, one of them tried to salvage his write off. We later nicknamed his car "The Crab" as it was going sideways on the road.
  52. #52
luckly he didn't kill himself driving with fucked tyres .

A big lesson to be learnt
  53. #53
eesh, this was almost a month ago... well if anyone wants to see the damage, theres a picture up in my build thread. The exhaust's been fixed, parts ordered, and the chassis legs are as straight as an arrow, only the crossmember and a small bend in the front... plate? (there are two almost triangular shaped pieces welded to the front of the chassis legs, it looks like these bent in slightly rather than the chassis itself)

As for driving a deathtrap, i drove it home, it didnt pull at all, and apart from the exhaust blowing and tyre scraping the bumper a little, it was fine. the new crossmember is going in at the weekend, and as soon as thats on with a new fan and bumper, its off for mot and a thorough check by the bloke up there.

I swear its a good job i take half the shit on here with a pinch of salt, but of course, if it turns out to be anything less than perfect, feel free to gloat (Y)

    Any pics ?
