Loud grinding noise

  1. #1
    Originally thought it was the driveshaft, so had that replaced. And it did actually go for about a week. But now it's back, i'll try and explain it the best I can.

    For a few minutes it wont make a noise, but all of a sudden if I ease off the accelerator, there's a huge grinding noise, which I can literally feel through the floor. Sometime's it does it anyway, but it's almost guaranteed to happen when I ease off. So I have to keep the car in high revs when going through somewhere busy to avoid embarrassment.

    The cars currently for sale, so I really need to get this fixed before it goes. Think it could do with a gearbox oil change?

    any help very welcome. Cheers

    Edit;

    Dipping the clutch doesn't seem to make a difference

    Which driveshaft did you replace?

    Have you had the car on a jack or ramps and had it running (start it in 3rd with the wheels off the ground)? Doing this is a good way of finding the noise, as even though it only happens when moving, it might be constantly making the noise just very quietly.

    I've recently replaced DS Hub, both wheel bearings, NS Driveshaft and then the DS all because originally when the gearbox was under load, ie letting the gearbox slow the car down it was making a grinding noise. Which everyone said was the diff in the gearbox. I only replaced all those parts because I don't want to spend hundreds on a recon box, I'd rather buy new and the parts was the only way of doing it.

    Turns out the grinding noise was from the intermediate bearing on the DS driveshaft.

    Hope this helps somewhat...

    Thanks for the reply, it was the offside that I replaced. I'm aware of a small tear on the cv gaiter/boot on the nearside, but I have huge doubts that it's that that's causing the grinding.

    I have the kit to replace it, but I've lose the locking nut key!

    if like you say theres a cv tear i would check to see its not leaking. i had this problem on my flatarch and replaced the whole cv joint with driveshaft and it solved the same noise you seem to be having.

    Would love to replace the whole driveshaft but cant afford it. Seems like I'll have to try and get the locking nuts sorted then!

    Thanks for the help

    I have th same problem with mine. Th driveshaft oil seals were leaking . Replaced them and gear oil. Still bit noisy . But its th gearbox on mine. You get this heavy oil to quieten it down. Cant mind what its called though
