Manifold Touching Filter

  1. #1
Went to fit an aftermarket exhaust manifold today and upon application it comes to rest on the oil filter housing and it still needs about an inch more room to sit flush with the head.
Its been said that an extra inch makes all the differance but in this case theres just no arguing that point.

Can anyone recomend a shallow oil filter that will fit to a MK2 VTR and allow enough room for my manifold to sit comfortably without burning through the filter housing.

Even more of a problem, i went and bought a front mounted oil cooler with a temp sensored sandwhich block adding another inch of room required.

MAN this replacement filter will have to be tiny.

    Cheers Guys.

You have to convert it to a mk1 filter set up

have you got the spin on or cartridge oil filter?

sounds like you may have the wrong down pipe/ minifold for the type of oil filter.
    is it 4-2-1 or 4-1

you could use a r5 gt oil filter (smaller in size)

or just put two exhaust gaskets on to clear the oil filter...

Cheers guys ive been looking into the mk1 conversion or doubling up on the gaskets but i really do need alot of clearance.

In all fairness it does look like the wrong manifold but i ordered a 99-03 vtr 8v phase 2 manifold and mine is a W-reg year 2000 facelift vtr...wheres the problem?

I think the first move is to double up on the gaskets and get a shallow filter to ensure clearance then worry about my oil cooler at a later date.

Thanks to all for such a speedy reply, any ideas as to where i can order the shallower oil filters from?

    Thanks, James.

two gaskets won't give an inch more clearance though lol

so what filter set up have you got, spin on (mk1 and early mk2) or plastic capped (later mk2)? if it's the latter, just get it converted to a mk1 set up

hi mate i changed my original manifold to a 4-2-1 manifold this year and had the problem, on a mk2 vtr.

Before i fitted it i researched a few things and bought a mk1 1 filter and union i think its called to fit the mk1 filter on.

Also you have to tap a thread into the engine block to fill a hole up left from the oil feed pipe thing you take off.

Its an absolute bastard to do in my opinion,

Im not mechanic the only things i can do on a car is oil filter change, oil change, gearbox oil change, change wheels and a few interior bit n bobs but thats all from guides on this forum.

In total, taking old manifold off, moving oil filter, tapping a thread for a M10 bolt, fitting new manifold, fitting exhaust, putting oil back in, running up was around 9 hours.

if you can change the manifold, the rest of its a piece of piss.

I have the metal spin on canister type oil filter.

And yes your right 2 gaskets will not give me enough clearance but the two gaskets acompanied by the R5 GT Oil filter just may.

The R5 filter is ALOT more shallow and looks like it might just work.
It just really pissed me off today, i finished work raised her up did full disks & pads, coil over kit, ball joints, drop links, polly bush etc. all ready for the winter, came to to the manifold and it was an absolute no go from there!

Ended up putting the old one back on and pondered for ages until you chaps helped me out.

    theres your problem

you've got the manifold for a mk2 vtr with the plastic cap oil filter (2001>)

    you need the mk1 manifold/down pipe (<2000)

your is the cross over i.e mk2 shell with mk1 running gear+ engine.

Yeah this has proven to be a problem for me elsewhen.

Cant return the manifold so im gona have to seek a fix though other means i.e. R5 filter.

Cheers for certifying it for me though.

Be careful using another cars oil filter as each engine operates under different pressures and you could damage your engine.

Just do what the thousands of other people have done and change to a mk2 filter.
  16. #16
Yeah it might have to be done.

find someone doing the opposite (mk2 to mk1) and grab their housing etc

    or scrappy
