Oil Leak..a lot

There's a lot of oil on my gearbox and on my sump, guessing that's the sump gasket or something?

Also a slightly worrying one as i don't know what it would be..but as i look at the engine on the front left corner (just above the alternator) there's a patch of wet oil...and whenver i leave my car parked overnight there's a small patch of oil just a bit bigger than a 50p on the floor..what owuld this be?

If it`s an 8v engine then the rubber rocker cover seal can leak, also the head gasket`s are known for leaking by the alternator too.

Yeah it's 8v. How much would i be looking at for a headgasket? is it easy to change like all other gaskets?

It's not actually near the rubber seal at the top i don't think, it's on the top corner of the block IIRC

Well price wise i`m not too sure,I had my hg done about 2yrs ago including a head skim & i`ve got a tiny amount of oil seeping by the alternator.I`ve left mine alone because the car runs fine. It`s best to phone around a few garages & get quotes,or if you have a mate who can do it then call in a favour.

My car runs perfectly as far as i'm aware, so i might leave it, it's just annoying knowing that there's oil leaking out of the engine

Don`t be tempted though to put a leak fix oil additive in because they can damage your engine(just a heads up)

My hg went same place on my old car, I ran it like that for quite a while like 6months+ eventually scrapped it because of other problems but if you just keep an eye on the oil should be ok until you have the time to get it done or whatever

As I said 2yrs later the car is still running fine,& as above just keep an eye on it.

Cool, thanks guys, ill just make sure it stays topped up with oil...anyway to check how much is in there other than the dipstick? as i cant stand the twisty design of the stick because it just picks up excess oil from the pipe it's in.

The dipstick is the only way of checking the oil level & yes they are a bloody pain to use.

as stevo said just keep an eye on it, my head gasket has been weeping for over a year now with no change and runs fine.

wouldn't worry about the leak above the alternator, my 1.1 had the same, never had a problem with the leak.

if the floor is soaked with oil, you have a problem lol

Same here although mine seeps out oil on the edge of the head, never once has there been any oil on the road.
