awesome MOT fail.

Car failed MOT on 18 points, however I can fix 16 of them quite easily (brake pipe, handbrake cable, bit of welding, windscreen washer & a seatbelt). The other 2 need a bit of advice.

    001. Anti-lock braking system warning lamp does not illuminate [3.4.1b]

Now the ABS is plugged in, but it wasn't when I got the car, might it need resetting?

and 018. Steering system has excessive free play detected at the steering wheel (steering rack fitted) [2.2.A.1b]

Mechanic said it has about an inch of free play, he cant see what's causing the free play but has suggested it might be the rack anyone got any ideas about it?

    Thanks

    Checked the ABS fuses?

Play in steering maybe down to worn steering rod ends and centre joint?
  3. #3
Just checked, fuses are both OK.

It had a new rod end before I bought it and both sides look ok. I'll check the centre joint tomorrow. Is there any way the steering column could have play in it?

UJ in steering collum / rack.

as for the light, put some tape over it.
  5. #5
lights not on at all tonts which is the problem...

think ill grab a rack and column from scrapyard on the weekend
  6. #6
put some tape over where it should be...and they will never know if its on or not.
  7. #7
As said check the fuse for the ABS matey first place to start, i take it the abs dosent work at all? its not just that the bulb is gone?

    its supposed too yes.
but if it had tape on it, id let it slip through the net... but depends on who has it i suppose. go ask the tester if he agrees with "cant see it, cant fail it" lol.
i find it stupid that a car with abs that doesnt work can fail, yet a car with no abs as standard can pass. its not like the car is undriveable.

Does the abs work then? If so, ever thought about a new bulb?
  11. #11
no idea if it works or not, i know it didnt work on the rear last week as it locked up but the sensors were broken. got a new beam on it now wth good sensors so I'll give it a try.

if it doesnt work then am i looking at just replacing the abs unit?

bit of an update to this went down to ricks this evening (saxovtrmk1) to get steering column and washer jets and had a good look round my column and rack and there doesnt seem to be 'excessive' play in it since the track rods both move when we moved the wheel a very small amount so i dont know where he has got 'excessive' free play from

gonna get it tracked up this weekend see what it feels like then. got a handbrake cable on the way and scrappers for backbox, seatbelt on saturday, check my abs light out friday, brakets made up for number plate at work friday, welding and brake pipe on sunday and hopefully back in for a re test early next week!
