Another MOT another problem

  1. #1
Just had my MOT (again) and it failed (again) for excesive play in the steering, due to nakered bearing in the tracking arm (I think).

    Can someone please tell me.

Is the tracking arm just behind the inlet manifold, if not what is the steering component behind the inlet manifold?

How much time will it take to replace it and how much work is it?

I think I know what I'm doing but some pointer would be helpful

    Cheers

Common problem. You need a new steering rack really as they do get play there.

A Rack is reasonably cheap with recon's at abround £35. However changing one is a cunt to do. Some people say you can change the rack with the engine in, however I have always taken the engine out for this.

I thought the steering rack is in the lower part of the engine bay?

You have the track rod end (on the end of the tracking rod). And the tracking rod goes into the steering rack. Get him to show you exactly what it is that needs replacing.

Its likely to be this part:

to change that part, its 3 bolts to undo iirc.
can be done while engine is still in but its fiddly as hell, much easier if you take engine out

Did this on my VTS and took fooking ages as the inlet manifold had to come off to get access to it properly

An absolute pig of a job, i would pay and let the merchanics do this one.

I wouldnt take the engine out , dont get me wrong they awkward to get to and you may need to remove other parts to help gain access to the rack but its totally possible to do this without removing the engine
