Squeaking Noise When Reversing

  1. #1
    Hi,

When I put the car in reverse and slowly release the clutch pedal I've got a very annoying squeaking noise. It seems to get worse with the time.

Any idea what that could be? Clutch? Gearbox?

I'd say clutch/release bearing if its when ur releasing the clutch but weird how its only in reverse though.

Thanks, is that complicated to replace? Do I have to replace the clutch or can I do only the bearing?

There might be a bit of a noise when going forward but it's nowhere near when in reverse.

gearbox off job. you can by them seperate or as part of a clutch kit

If its your release bearing I would just drive it untill the clutch is going as they can squeak for years. You wouldnt bother changing the baring only you would do the entire clutch but its up to you.

I would agree with every comment made, but if it was the release bearing on its way out it would be whining all the time not just in reverse surely??

The bearing itself just grinds until to worn to cope and then you get a consistant whine.

Could be a lack of oil in the gear box as the car will whine in reverse regardless.

Or if its a squeak when slowly releasing the pedal it might be the pedal housing or master/slave cylinder.

It seems to get worse with the time, the squeaking noise can now be heard in all the gears although not as bad as in reverse. I'll keep driving until the clutch is dead, I don't really want to replace anything if it's not completely worn out, thanks for all the comments.
I've replaced the gearbox oil last year. I need to clean up the bottom of the gearbox and check for leaks.

How much is it for a clutch replacement?
