Important! : Engine cutting out

  1. #1
basically had this problem for a while now. After i rev the car past 4k RPM it decides it doesn't wanna stay alive. Every time i drop the clucth to change gear it will drop revs extremely quickly and if i drop the clutch around a corner etc it will cut out, sometimes it saves itself but most of the time it will cut out, which is obviously dangerous as the power steering goes out too.
when i pulled up at home tonight i managed to get a video, as when i restarted the engine it kept cutting out straight away.

Shot in the dark...idle control valve OR spark plugs gone OR damp in fuel. I had that a while back when the car was starting but not whilst going along...

Dunno about the ICV but it's just been serviced 4k miles ago and it's done it for a few months, i just don't rag the shit out of it all the time.

It's gotta be something to do with idle though mate I would have thought?
  5. #5
i would say icv aswell. had the same problem on 2 different engines and its down to the icv

if its when you let off the revs then probably the icv isnt working properly and closes so your not getting any air at all into the engine, but you said when you take it over 4k it does it too? when its at those kind of revs the icv isnt in use so it could be something else.. sounds like it could be some kind of fueling problem to me

When i say over 4k, i mean if i drive the car aggressively and get over 4k..when i idle or dip the clutch then the revs drop and it stalls..what should ido to the ICV? just clean it and soak the piece of shit in WD40?

clean it up with wd40 or some carb cleaner and see how it goes but it might need replacing.

Well Mr Dom is popping over in a bit so i'll see how it is after he's molested it a little.
  11. #11
Right well Dom's molestation didn't do anything, still pissing me about any more ideas?

This one has confused me, the ICV was pretty clean, and still worked on the ignition (popped out and in).

Unless it keeps sticking (which gauging by how clean it looks I doubt it), it ain't the ICV.

Just watched that Video Karl, it does look like the ICV with the rev's fluctuating tbh. Somethings taking the piss. If you want to pop past mine if you bring the cat down, I can take another look at it under better light.

Is the 3 plugs to the throttle connected? After doing my headgasket I forgot to connect mine and it would hunt and die all the time.

No holes in breather pipers or maybe one has come loose?

    All 3 plugs are in.

One of the breather's has a slight bit of oil around it, but it is nothing connected to the problem

Same, I'm not sure what the symptoms of a fucked Temp sensor are, maybe? or not?

Mass air flow sensor? That one you just unplug iirc, not sure what to look for though, google is your friend...

Noo, erm, the sensor on top of the thermostat housing.

I'm lost for ideas, its nearly 5am. I shouldn't be thinking this late

Bad lamda sensor injecting wheey to much feul carnt burn it so it dies, also map sensor maybe?
  20. #20
Also did you change feul filter on last service as they be known to cause problems like this if they old.
  21. #21
1- lambda sensor was changed twice for MOT last monh.
2-Fuel filter was changed about 6k miles ago on it's major service.
    3-FUCKING HELP
  22. #22
Could be the green temp sensor, had this on my 106 and changed the, MAP Sensor, ICV and the temp sensor and the last one was the one that resolved it
  23. #23
Still could be the icv imo they don't usually just die they still move but not as they should when they were new, personally would try one from another car/saxo before trying other sensors
